What would your 2nd choice of powder be? BH209 is impossible to find except on shady looking websites and not mention the bottle size is now listed as 8 oz and the price has almost doubled what it was for the 10 oz bottle so starting to think it's time for a backup plan.

Triple 7, Pyrodex, ..., quit muzzleloader hunting?

Thanks.

Triple 7 is my first choice. BH209 is a last resort for me.

Had good results with Triple 7, and White Hots.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

209 is a great powder. When you find it buy a couple of jugs and put it away!

Thank me later.

Thanks guys.

Yeah it’s that finding BH209 part. I haven’t seen any in a store up this way since the summer of 2019.

Schuetzen, Swiss, or Goex black powder. All will get the job done.

Pyrodex rs shoots just fine in my two rifles and one shotgun. Just got to clean your weapon after use.

I have seen Natchez Shooting Supplies list the BH209 on sale several times this summer. I dont know if they can ship it or if it has to be picked up in their store. I have ordered from them several times and never a problem. Pull up their site and get added to their email listing.

On a side note, Triple 7 always was a winner for us before the BH came along. When they put the powder into pellets it made follow-up shots a lot faster if needed. The only drawback was always the nasty cleanup. BH is a whole lot cleaner than all the others and has gotten steadily more expensive each year as demand for it has risen.

If you decide to jump into holy black.. they may be backordered on what you need at the moment, but they are usually pretty good at getting powder in. Last I bought was from Black Creek Gun shop out of VA. Think you can google them.

I find 777 to be *almost* as easy as BH209- it's the most reliable blackpowder sub I've ever used, and is almost as easy to clean up. Truly its only downside is the "crud ring" that develops after 2 or 3 rounds, but for me as a hunter, it's only the first round that matters in 99% of scenarios so that's really a non-issue. And, 777 is consistently ignited by the ML-specific 209 primers as opposed to BH209, which requires full strength standard 209s for reliable ignition.

I been finding blackhorn at Walmart in Central FL. $50+ for 8 Oz is crazy. I use so little and like it so much better than 777 that I paid it though. I shot 777 for years and think it's a great powder, but Blackhorn is so much cleaner. I'd like to go smokeless at some point, but just can't right now.

Having shot 777 for years, would probably go back to it if I had to. May play around with some of the newer smokeless alternatives. That said, I find BH209 to be much cleaner than 777, no crud ring, and actually prefer a 209A primer to the many variations of ML only 209 primers out there. Have learned first hand that different brands render different results. Back in the day it was easier and cheaper to find Fed 209As. I lucked out and bought a brick for bygone prices.
