What to plant now ?
Got plenty of doves around and want to keep them around
I'm prepping the fields and will be finished and ready to plant in a couple days
Millet ?
Milo ?
Sunflower ?

When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself
The older I get the better I used to be

Top-Sewed Wheat just before season....that's all I do anymore. Cheaper/Easier.

Brown top millet or proso millet and hope the army worms don’t show up.

Plant all 3 in strips with a lane in between each sow thick Egyptian wheat down the middle and on the edges to stand in while hunting. Keep the blank rows disced up and bare dirt all summer and spread cheap bird seed on the bare rows all summer. You are a little late for sunflowers to be ready by the first of September but you might get a later hunt off them. Top sow the wheat in your bare rows a week or so before you want to hunt it and hope it doesn’t rain.

Exactly what I would do. Might mix in some cracked corn on one of the rows for visibility sake. Keep them fed until end of August and bare dirt exposed and then hit them with the top sowed wheat.

You’ll have birds.

Absolutely

I mentioned the millets because sunflower will be hard pressed to make it by the opener.

One of our best fields had corn, sorghum, sunflower, several types of millet and beans planted in strips about 20’acres total. My buddy started cutting the millets first in July. And every few weeks he’d bushog new strips and then disk where he’d already bushogged. By the opener we had standing corn and sunflowers to hide in. He planted wheat in all the freshly disked ground week of the opener.

Brown top is about a 60 day millet and proso a little longer til maturity.

Yea if your sunflowers ain’t 10-12” tall by now I wouldn’t waste the money on sunflower . Just do the millets and top sew wheat

Milo is the most draught resistant. Forecast looks very hot and dry.

Too late for Milo to be ready by opener. Browntop is your friend.
