Burned May 10 with temps in 90’s and pretty dry. Hasn’t been burned in the last 10-12 years so was loaded with fuel.



Unthinned loblolly plantation that had never been burned. Was burned June 1 with high RH and little to no wind.

For those who are experienced in growing season burns, what are the conditions that make burning pine stands this time of year productive and not destructive? I have experience with with early season burning and I avoid the combination of high winds and low RH.

Growing season fire is much easier to contain and control. RH values are much higher than dormant season, there’s more green foliage, typically less wind, and it’s hard to believe but the duff layer retains moisture longer because of higher RH, shade and low winds. Hardwoods drainages and slopes will hardly burn this time of year if at all. Due to the higher RH values and foliage flame intensity is typically less, so even with higher temps, it doesn’t necessarily equal hotter fire. I love burning now. Typically get a completely different plant response than burning January thru March, and it’s safer.

Thanks for the reply. What RH is ideal this time of year. Does the RH generally get too high at night to sustain the burn?

What about using fuel models to predict the fire behavior?

I rarely look at fuel models. They can help and they can also lead to overconfident careless fire starters. 😜

Just an FYI........ I took the class last summer to get recertified as a burn manager and the whole class is taught around fuel models....I didnt remember talking about it much back in school but the methods that were taught in last year's burn class made a lot of sense and seemed like it took a lot of the guess work out of predicting what was going to happen once the fire was lit.

Here are a few pictures from some of our growing season burns. One thing you have to remember once everything has greened up is that there will be a lot of smoke. We burned a few miles south of Troy for a couple days and there was a huge smoke plume that could be seen from 231. It didn't have any impact on anyone but it turns a lot more heads with a thick plume and people not seeing a lot of smoke this time of year.
