The hunting around thomaston, uniontown, faunsdale, all of south Hale county is great hunting. I was just talking about the parts of wilcox. Camden and south is were the deer start getting smaller in size and scores north Wilcox, and East Wilcox have very large deer. Our average bucks weigh around 215 and we've killed one that was 256. When you get south of town the average weights are more in the 180lbs range on mature deer. My family own a lot of land between faunsdale and newburn and the size really is about the same on average score and weight. What i t comes down to is the soil. There is and article about the new alabama record book that a biologist i forget his name but he said that 85% of the deer entered were from the black belt. Our best deer on our property was a 179 3/8 killed 2 yrs ago. We get lots of pics of 130-145 deer but thats by far the biggest. We are only a few miles from Portalnd and our neighbors have recently killed a 2 160's. Now if you only go about 2 miles south of us its rare to kill a 125" deer. But there is no doubt in my mind south of greenboro to catherine and between safford and thomaston is probally the best big buck area in our state. I wish i hunted there!

"SP" was Roland Cooper State Park its on the river east of town and about 2 miles across Pine Berran from Portland Landing since most hunters have heard of Portland.

In my opinion one of the 3 best areas in Alabama to have a good chance at killing a 140+ buck on a somewhat regular basis. The other 2 areas are Jackson Co. (I am biased, but based on what has been killed there the past 10 years I don't think many would argue) and last is an area in Bullock Co., which looks almost identical to the land in and around Faunsdale and Union Town. One thing all three have in common are relatively low deer numbers for Alabama and a good buck to doe ratio.

One of my best friends had 600 acres in Bullock Co. that we used to hunt a lot when I was at Auburn. I can't remember what the area was called but I believe it was just a few miles away from Kirkpatrick??? I think that's the name of the area... It was about 20 minutes from the Waugh exit off of 85 and pretty much just prairie land all around.

TD, its Fitzpatrick and it is fantastic land that is all privately owned. True world class deer killed there regularly.

thanks, that would be it... I missed a true 160+ main frame 10 back in the late 90's. Walked out of a woodlot and into the overgrown pasture I was hunting. Didn't see him until he got about 60 yds away and might not have seen him but he was snort wheezing (didn't even know what that was back then). I saw him and he saw me about the same time. I had a good 5-6 seconds to look at him and then I decided to pull my gun up. He ran I shot and missed. My friend who's dad owned the property saw him again about a week later, but about 400 yds away. Said my 160 guesstimate wasn't off at all. Had a dang good bass pond/ lake there too. Nothing to catch 5 or 6 -6 to 8 pounders per person per afternoon and a 10 pounder wasn't that uncommon either...

Why cedars??? Would the area sw of Tuscaloosa on 20/59 have similar soil characteristics? There sva crap load of cedars in that area.

Pines need mycorrhizae to grow well and the prairie soils do not support this fungus very well.

They also need soil that has a pH of less than 7 - rare in true plackbelt prairie dirt.
