Recently bought a Hoyt Ventum 30. Currently set up at 60# with a 29" draw length. I'm shooting 29" arrows with total weight averaging 455 grains. My question; is my set up enough for hogs in the Bankhead? I also might be able to hunt bear in KY in the next couple of years.

I think you’ll be fine. May wanna stick to a well built fixed blade broadhead. Hogs are tough. Congrats on the new rig and welcome to bowhunting.

Thaks!

The broadhead I’m using is a 100 grain G5 M3. Will that do?

I’ve never tried them but they look like a beefier version of the original Montec. Good looking broadhead, may have to try some of those out.

Your set up will work great for most everything you want to go after.

No issues unless you hit the shoulder. Their plate will stop anything.

I decided to set my bow back to full poundage; 73 pounds.

Been practicing a lot, too. Every day, for about an hour. Moreso on weekends.

One thing I think might be true is that if your form is off even a little bit, a fixed blade broad head seems to expose it.

What are your opinions on this? Is practicing with a broadhead a good way to perfect form?

If you're new to archery as a whole and not just the hunting aspect of it, it may take some time to adjust to the higher poundage. In other words you're possible form issues could be the results of muscles that are not yet trained to bow shooting. I'm too old for it now but when I was younger I thought I had to have a speed demon of a bow to kill deer so I was set up at 82 pounds with an overdraw and as light as I thought I could get away with for arrows (25-3/4" long). I should have been happy with a lighter pull, no overdraw and a bit heavier arrows because my form needed to be near perfect with that setup and it sounded awful when I released and arrow. I was more fit than most but I was fairly new to archery and I could pull the weight no problem, but without realizing it my shooting form and my steadiness were suffering because of it. Especially during practice when I was shooting 50 or more times each afternoon. I'd start off fairly good and go downhill from there (too dumb to realize I was growing a bit tired). I didn't feel tired. It was frustrating at best.

Now this may not be the case with you. I have no idea how old you are or what kind of shape your shooting muscles are in but if you notice a decline in performance after several shots, it's something to consider.

I now shoot 61 lbs and a bit heavier arrows which also makes a quieter and smoother shot. My bow is a dinosaur though but I still kill deer with it most years.

I hope you have a great summer shooting hogs and a great deer season as well.

I'm with you CC. If I shoot more yhan 15-20 minutes I start dropping my hand and spraying arrows all over the target. I'll leave my gear on the patio on weekends and shoot 3-4 arrows several times a day. I'm a lot more accurate doing that than pounding it out

Very new to archery; less than a year.

The higher poundage isn't that big a deal. I don't get physically tired much. Mentally, though, it's a different story.

Some days, at 30-40 yards, I can chew the ring of a target. Other days, well, I just suck. It's on those days I suck that I notice my broadhead goes wonky. And, I'm not shooting field points that well, either.

I want to be good enough to consistently fear "robin hooding" arrows out to 40 yards.

When you went from 60# to 73#, did you change arrows? If the arrow spine was selected to match the 60# weight and you did not swap arrows when you went to 73#, they’re under spined now. You will have days where you just won’t shoot as good. When you see you’re having one of those, just put the bow up for the day. If you have OCD tendencies, archery is probably going to drive you nuts. Most OCD folks wind up with target panic. One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to not overthink things. Find an experienced archer and shoot with them.

When I first got the bow, it was at 73 pounds. I then dialed it down to 60 because I'd read somewhere that doing so might reduce planing (which I thought was the problem). Then I learned draw weight really isn't an issue when it comes to planing. My experience so far bears that out. Some days, everything is well and I can nail the insides of the circle of a yellow jacket target at 40, and even 50 yards. Other days, I'm lucky to hit the damn big-a**** yellow block =D. On those days where I'm shooting well with field points, I also find I'm also doing well with my broadhead.

On the days when suck, that broadhead flies like a MLB slider
