Have a lease in Oak Hill. Rayonier clear cut a large portion of the property earlier this year. I was excited for the season as it really opened up much of the property that was not easily huntable previously. However, they sprayed during the late summer and it's essentially a large wasteland for now. How long before browse and undergrowth return ? It has awesome possibilities if/when life returns. Luckily it only represents a portion of our lease or this would've been a wasted season I'm afraid.

I sat in a spot just as you described, this afternoon.
Saw 11 deer.
You need to be hunting that area, especially now during the rut.

All I know is I wish I had about 100 gallons of whatever they spray to use on pasture fencing.

That stuff they spray will kill privet , and broom sage won’t even grow where they spray on it for a couple of years.

Usually a mixture of Arsenal, Roundup and Escort I think. Not positive on the Escort. Triclopyr is another component that may be in the mix. The vegetation determines what and how much

Worst part is it’s soil active so any food plots you plant after they sprayed will most likely not do well either.

They will probably plant trees this winter and spray it again this summer.

Probably not. If they sprayed this summer they’ll plant this season. Otherwise they’ll plant year one then release spray with Arsenal (imazapyr) only within the next couple of years to release the pines from hardwood competition. Only time I’ve seen pre and post planting spraying is when they didn’t get a good kill on the initial spray job.

There’s about 50 different combinations going these days. It’s not as standard as it once was. A lot of guessing this and that on here.

I would find a place far away from the spraying to hunt. Think about it, do you really want to eat those deer right now. Maybe come back in a couple of years after the spraying stops. The residue will be there for a while. Not sure how long , but stay away from areas and do not breathe those chemicals for a while. There should be warnings put up at the gates. It can make you sick, especially if you already have a condition. Maybe see if the company you lease from can burn from now on.

I am hunting one that was sprayed in the summer. I was getting basically no activity for the first half of hunting season but it has really picked up with the rut kicked in, especially in the last week. Camera activity has tripled. I am sticking with it but I can't wait for next year and when it gets back to normal.

Same thing happened to us this year and I had a post a few months back.
And I got a hundred different answers from 100 different people.
A a member in our club talked to Drew Nix who wildlife Forester department.
This is what he told us probably imazapyr. It will affect those acres for another year or two if that's what they used.
And it is the most common sight prep herbicide in South East. I would not waste my money to replant. Or plant next year except for clover.legumes and very tolerant of imazapyr.

I hope this is a sarcastic post.
As a Registered Forester, I now know how Doekiller, Lonster and the other attorneys on here feel when legal issues are discussed and all the armchair experts give their advice.

You must hunt in a hole far away from anything if you don’t think you’ve eaten a deer that hasn’t had some type chemical in it’s system. Every timber company sprays some 2-3 times in a pine plantations life cycle. If you can find me a timber company that burns and has land available at a reasonable rate let me know.
