A buddy and I are going on a turkey hunt on a place this spring that’s got hogs.
We probably won’t even see one but we’re playing hypotheticals.
If a hog walked out, how far could you kill it with a standard turkey load or TSS?
I’m thinking the neck or even just behind the shoulder would be the place to shoot and I think about 30 yards.
The place we’re going won’t let you pull your pistol and blaze away. We asked.

“Killing tomorrow’s trophies today.”

On the distance I like to walk to my stands:
“The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”

I would think shoot them in the head and get tss into the brain. I have no experience with hogs and tss however. I’m guessing yardage about 30 like you.

I shot a decent size sow at 20 yds with number 6s that ran off. Rolled two piglets up at about 15. N2trkys shot a big pig at around 25 a little while latter that toted it also.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

My dad and I shot some pigs on portland landing last year during my turkey hunt. We were stalking up as close as we could to them (15-20 yds) and dropping them dead in their tracks with head/neck shots shooting a 20ga with TSS.

I've dropped a ~80lber at 20 yards with 2.5oz of 8.5s. It was broadside and I aimed like I would on a deer. I was very surprised at the amount of blood and several pellets even passed through from what i remember. I flipped the hog over and could see little blood bubbles on the opposing side.

Pretty sure you could hammer those small/medium sized hogs out to at least 30 yards.

Not a hog, but I've dropped a coyote at 60 yards too.

I’d think they would need to be pretty close. Hunting with a buddy and we eased up on a sounder resting in a green field. They alerted at about 30 yds and he shot one of the bigger ones with a 12ga TSS load. Hog wore it like a new shirt.

I can tell you from personal experience that 12ga Longbeard 6's won't kill one at 20yds (at least not DRT, may have died later).....but it'll make them un-ass the area with a quickness

I walked into the middle of a sounder year before last and shot one at about 20 yards right in the face with 20 gauge TSS. Pig ran like he'll never to be seen again. I did hear a pack of coyotes chasing something in the same area a little while later. Hopefully they got on him.

I just can't bring myself to shoot a hog with a $10 shell. Maybe take a couple long beard #4"s.

My experience with this is no more than 20 yds to the head and neck area with tss

I've thought about carrying some small buckshot (like a #1) for hogs but I'd be scared that it would mess up my choke. Maybe carry an imp cyl choke and wrench in my vest so I could switch it out real quick before I made a stalk.

SxS or O/U and keep a slug or buckshot in the 2nd barrel w/ appropriate choke. Game over

I have no idea if it's legal to have the shell on you or not? That's been a question in my mind.

I carry a couple rounds of #4 buckshot and it will kill a sow with little effort but big boars I prefer some 00 or 000. Either way if they run off an die I'm not real concerned the #4 is better if you've for a few pigs out in front of you there is more shot in the air probably 40 pellets in some #4.

I shot a big sow in the neck with 12g 5's last year at about 20 yards and she turned around and laughed at me.

It’s illegal. When we got busted for corn the warden went through all of our shells to make sure we didn’t have any illegal shells.

Now, if you had it zipped up in your backpack you may get out of it , but if it’s in the shotgun or attached to it , it’s illegal.

I get lots of reports of hogs killed at 30 and 40 yds with TSS 8s or 9s, with head and neck shots. This one was at 30 with 1-5/8 oz of 9s.....

I haven't shot but two with tss. I head shot a 125 pound boar that was DRT at about 40 yards and I shot a second smaller sow running that ran about 50 yards. Not sure exactly where it was hit.

We’re going to Portland.
It’s the state don’t want you shooting hogs with your sidearm. Go figure.
