If you were creating some stand sites on a piece of property, what would your ideal setup look like? Property is pines with several hardwood draws and ridges interspersed throughout. Pines can be cleared.

Easy access with different wind setups for main travel routes or acorn flats

Transitions between pines and hardwoods. Stay out of bottoms due to swirling wind but be able to look down in them. As jb said above…remember predominant wind is northwest for a good cold front

My first two thoughts whenever I’m gonna put up a stand. Easiest quietest way to get there and what wind I can hunt it in.

Workin for the man, huntin when I can.

What JB said - plus - if u can set your stands back to where u can leave and never be detected - if u always hunt the right wind - then it’s like u never hunted if they never detect u leaving - always low pressure

Hunt the wind - leave it better than you found it - love your neighbor as you love your self

I did this with my current place. It was a clear cut. Which was what I wanted. It’s hard to screw up a clearcut. All my roads are wide and easily accessible. Green fields run north and south. All my stands are easily accessible from the rear, and they all face directly north or south. Fields will always be able to grow and not get shaded out as the timber grows. I never face the sun. It’s pretty sweet.

Good info guys. fr8-shkr that's what I'm looking at doing. I'm probably go to clearcut or thin semi soon and want to build back what I want. Should I leave a buffer around my plots? If so, let it grow back naturally or plant something? What size plots? I know some people cut lanes off of their plots. Plots near property lines or center of property? Distance between plots? I know it isn't an exact science, just looking for opinions.

Feathered plot edges work extremely well. It can be done by leaving some spring/summer growth standing (millet, sorghum, etc) or by letting stuff grow back naturally but keep it bush hogged every couple years.

Pinch points are my favorite stands though. They are money during the rut, but good just about any time. You can create them but it’s a lot of work. We are going to try and do this on a fresh cut we have (private land and land owner is helping). We are going to try and move slash/debris into the drainages and simulate fence rows. Ideally those areas will grow back up leaving the hill tops and sides in fields. Very few trees/acre on this cut and pretty poor soil (reclaimed land). It’s gonna be a multi year project but we could potentially hunt here indefinitely so it’s worth the effort.

Hardest part is clearing the slash/debris off 20 or so acres. Need to preserve as much soil as possible so it will have to be done with light equipment.

Swamp fever, you might want to put a floor in that high-rise house.
