It's been a few years since our boxer passed, and I'm looking at maybe buying a beagle/blue heeler mix. I want a pup I can train to do something, lol! Can the Aldeer dog experts give me a little lesson on what that pup might do good at?
Squirrel dog, rabbit dog, deer tracking?

Well he will have a nose on him, pretty short in stature, prolly have some grit as well… I’d bet he or she would do whatever you would want. I don’t see why it couldn’t do all 3 you listed.

Possibly a squirrel dog but not likely. I’ve never seen a beagle tree a squirrel but a heeler might. Definitely could track deer. And would possibly make a great jump dog for rabbit hunting. Don’t even try to make it run rabbit s and track deer though. Needs to be one or the other. I’d try to make a good jump dog out of it. If it gets good at it I’d get a beagle or two to go with it. It would probably need some help to keep the race going. I’ve heard of folks crossing a beagle with a feist to make jump dogs. Would not be much different.

I've never hunted with jump dogs. That would be a training experience for both of us. I just know working dogs are wired to enjoy the job. And I've never had one to work with and bond to. Appreciate the advice.

You can’t really train one to be a jump dog. Just train it to be a rabbit dog and it will probably be pretty good at jumping rabbits.
It’s just an instinct thing. Some beagles have it but most don’t. Yes they will jump a rabbit looking for the scent to run. A good jump dog just has a almost unnatural ability to find one sitting tight in the thick nasty stuff and (jumping) it. It’s an intelligence thing in my opinion.
