Got an apple tree that needs trimming. Prolly way over due. It’s 5 year old I guess. Lots of little limbs. What I need to know

Start by getting rid of anything that grows towards the "Inside" of the tree. Don't let it get too tall. That's my system.

Leave limbs where you want to pick your fruit next year. If you see a limb and think to yourself "ill never be able to get to an apple there", then cut it off.

I believe a homeowner should get a pair of 36in lopping shears, and prune with them, standing on the ground. This would keep most of your fruit low enough to pick by hand or using a small step ladder. Make your fruit trees grow out instead of up. I use 36" corona loppers. Theyre about $60/set. Aluminum handles. Really good pruners. Ive been pruning alot of peach trees for alot of years and these are the best ive used yet. I can get three years or so out of a set. They will cut up to 2 inch green peach limbs, a little smaller if theyre dead and dry. I bought a set of heavy duty loppers the other day. Theyre supposed to cut 3" limbs. They will do it but theyre really heavy and it takes a good bit of strength to cut a limb that size. You wouldnt want to do it all day.
