Thanks!......We'll see how it does on the yotes. In the past I've had good luck catching coyotes by just resetting traps in the catch circle after I caught the first one on a dirt hole......This was sort of a play on that idea. The yotes have been making a regular run through here lately so my plan is to just keep resetting this set and letting all the smell from the last catch create curiosity for the next one......With three traps set around it if something messes with it at all they stand a good chance of getting caught.

CNC, did you trip the other two traps, or did the cat? The cat did.....I kinda had in mind that they might get two feet caught or maybe even get lucky and get a double......

Uh, you may want to check the regs on suspending or hanging bait within 25' of traps.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Nothing was "suspended"........by definition that would mean something is hanging in the air correct? A chunk of liver lashed to the side of a t-post with twine is neither "hanging" nor "suspended"....Is it? ...I'm seriously asking here and not trying to be smug. Is it about the bait being "above" the traps?.....because that's a slippery slope if we go by definition.....I could have a dirt hole in a bank that was above my traps. What if it tied to the base of the post? Would that make a difference?
What is the intent or purpose for this rule out of curiosity?

Just guessing but I’d say anything elevated above the ground would be considered suspended

Just guessing but I’d say anything elevated above the ground would be considered suspended This is thing and again I’m not trying to be a jackass……..but if something like this went to court and the rule says “suspend” then Webster’s dictionary defines suspend as “to hang” or “to keep from falling or sinking by some invisible force” such as buoyancy or a solution in a suspension…..There is nothing about it being “elevated”……Elevate means to raise or lift something to a higher position……Does this mean that your bait always has to be in a lower position than your traps?? If I bury my traps and then sprinkle bait on top of the ground is the bait not in an “elevated” position in relation to the traps?

You’re not thinking Game Warden thoughts but you’re trying to rationalize why there shouldn’t be a problem with elevated/suspended bait above your traps The argument isn’t with me it’s with the trapping laws and how they’re interpreted by a Game Warden Personally I don’t care one way or the other how you catch them and I’m glad to see more guys are getting into trapping Keep up the good work and don’t get in trouble

I'm gonna modify my setup just to make sure......I was really planning on using scent anyways as my attractant after the first catch so maybe we'll just make it a scent post from the beginning. Thanks for the heads up.

Modified set using a cardboard tube from some Christmas wrapping paper…..bait inside the tube…….may smear some bacon grease or something on the outside…..coyote urine would be good to spray on it…...Traps are set at 12 o’clock……9…..and 6…..with a pile of scat at 3 and my digging and sifting debris piled in the gap………Basically an inverted dirt hole set

If I saw that I would come over and investigate! Bound to get something. Good-luck! I will set my traps after the holiday rush hopefully!

Just thought I'd mention that I'm not using any pan covers and it seems to be working just fine.......All I'm really doing is getting the traps bedded securely and then sifting dirt back over the whole "moat" until it fills in and covers the traps over with a good layer of dirt.....I covered it all over the first time when I finished with peat moss just because it sifts and fills in so easy and I thought it would help create a nice soft surface for any animal to step on and never sense the metal traps below. I need to pick some more up when I go to town

Just a note on the coyote catch......I have 3 different sets I've made trying to catch them.....The set I finally caught that male on was an unbaited dirt hole that a possum had worked.....I had it baited with some fried chicken leftovers but the possum got it and dug out the hole bigger before getting caught in a DP.....I just left the set like it was and havent messed with it in a probably 10-14 days now.....The yote got caught just checking out the hole......He hooked me up with some scent by poopin and peeing everywhere after being caught.....I got high hopes now in snagging another one pretty soon. These have been some very trap shy yotes to try and catch. I have a hunch that they arent that hungry is one reason.

I've had good luck setting a egg in the top of the dirt hole and just a trap. Nothing else. Leave just enough egg where they can see the top of it. Don't have to worry about bugs eating all the bait either. That sounds like a good idea.....I'll have to try that. I found some al' naturel bait laying out back earlier that I threw in one of the dirt holes....Think I may have run over him with the truck or something. We'll see how that works.
