About 3 years ago I cut about 8 acres in my NE corner because of poor timber and beetles, which provided another opportunity. Had really not seen much deer activity in this area, mainly because it was all old mature timber, with minimal high quality food or bedding. Also seemed to be a lot of coyote activity. The clear cut was small but had a definite positive effect within a couple of years. I did not do anything too extensive on this one, just added some lanes though the c cut and put a fire break around entire parcel, to give them easy travel around, and through all the great groceries and cover in the c cut. The plan was to establish the lanes as travel corridors and that they would turn south along the road in front of the stand and go about their business. Being deer what they did was to immediately start continuing west across the road and loop around the north side of stand before heading south. Which is a problem because this is an east wind stand. Was going to address that this year, but this will all be gone after this season because of my upcoming timber cut. It did work well though, by last year deer sightings increased a lot from this stand and I saw 7 racked bucks from it in one morning, which is the most I have ever seen in a sit. Some of them were: Big arse deer, little rack. He met age and size guidelines for death, but got a pass. Lil guy trying to figure out what I am. Another lucky fellow. Big enough, wide enough, old enough, but no mass 7 with little in the way of tines. One of the few mature bucks I have ever had close enough to shoot with a bow. I can see why folks get excited about bow hunting. I will hate to see this go, but in 2-3 years it will be twice as good.
