Yeah, Drummond and U.S. Steel would do the same. Your permit unfolded and showed a map of the properties. I got into hunting about the time this practice went extinct in the early to mid-90's. I hung on to my Drummond and U.S. Steel map/permit for a long time but I don't think I still have them. You could hunt a LOT of land in Walker/Jefferson/Tuscaloosa counties with those two permits. I would take my U.S. Steel permit and strap my shotgun to the handlebars of my bike and ride to the end of our neighborhood as a 12 year old kid have access to all the hunting I could want. Weren't many deer there but there were some ol' timers that hunted that same area that killed some good ones.

Gulf States, Champion, Scott Paper and probably others. Some of it was really good hunting.

A Wilmont Timber permit was free if you lived in Wilcox county. That was the first one I got. Got a Union Camp for a few dollars when I was in college, but never killed a deer on it.

When I moved to Coosa county in 1977, I got a Kaul Lumber co free, and that was many thousands of acres. A Kimberly Clark was a few dollars and that was even more land than the Coosa WMA, which was over 40,000 acres in those days. A Hammermill permit was a few dollars too. I got a Macmillan Bloedel a couple of years, but they never made their best land available to the public.

I think that 1995 was the last year that KC still had a permit, though most of their land was leased. I killed 5 turkeys off one tract that year, and it became a club the next year and the good ole days were over. I never loaded my gun when turkey hunting until I heard one gobble. I would just ride the dirt roads and listen, and you could ride for hours

I grew up hunting a lot of the International Paper land in Baldwin county. Permits were like $15 then $25 and the last few years they sold permits they were $50 I think.

They owned somewhere around 166,000 acres and I was their Game Warden for several years.

In my opinion hunting was better way back then than it is now as far as the WMA's are concerned.

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of Sin and Death"

Oh yeah, hunting was better. We just haven’t fragmented enough small parcels with too many hunters and killed enough does yet - but we are getting there!!!

Tallapoosa County....'74 to about '80. Kimberly Clark lands-----Especially "Booger Holler".....near Dadeville. Killed quite a few Black Ducks and Woodies on those Beaver Ponds.....Nobody hunted the Ducks.
