So talking to my father in-law. Back in the day "80's early 90's" they could get a permit for about $15 to hunt timber company land. I'm not sure what company but he said it was before the private leases became so popular. I would most likely compare that property to the modern day WMA. I know the hunting laws were different back then but they put down some good deer. He is out of the hunting game now a days after several back surgeries and other health issues. I was wandering if anyone on here, ever had one of those permits and can compare how those private timber company lands were to the WMA's of today, in reference to deer quality and quantity? Also he said they could use guns as long as season was in unlike today's WMA's were we have selected gun days. Most of the areas he hunted with the permits were Bibb, Shelby, and Perry counties.

We hunted Kimberly Clark land when I was younger before all of it got leased and we really just hunted one tract that was close to the house, it was 1100 acres if I remember correctly and we killed good deer and saw deer most sits and rarely saw other people. It was nothing like public land is now. I guess we were lucky or there’s just that many more hunters now a days

I had one for Dadeville Lumber back in the late 70 early 80 . We ran dogs on it . Russell Lands bought it leased it out

Had one for Kimberly-Clark same years . Nothing special

I don't remember any difference in the hunting .

I killed and saw some nice deer come out of Tallapoosa county Off Dadeville lumber . Hunted some big clear cuts in that area too

Used to go a Alabama power office and just pick up a permit . Now it all lease land

I’ve hunted the cahaba since back then. Seems like it was USX that we got permits from maybe? Think the office was around bluff park and permits were like $10-15.

Seems like some them was 5 bucks back then they weren't much and alot of that ground wasn't hunted real hard.
Sj we were lucky back then alot more deer than there is now and had plenty of good places to hunt that didn't cost you a arm and a leg

Hunted Kimberly Clark in the early 90's. Also hunted a WMA in the same time frame. Hunting was better on the WMA.

In the 70s and 80s Container Corporation and Union Camp had 10's of thousands of acres of open permit land you could hunt for free. All the way from Letohatchee to Mt. Willing. Loaded with deer and turkeys

I sure do wish they would go back to doe days, I believe it would improve hunting in most of the state.

Hunted Scott Paper (Kimberly Clark bought them) and Wilmon for free. All you had to do was go get a free permit. Probably 20 or 30,000 acres. Rarely saw any other hunters. International was a small fee.

Gulf states became Wester Elf. Same outfit, just a name change. They started a lease program over the years same as everybody else.

Y’all just hadn’t killed enough does yet. You got to shoot them until you can go at least 10 days without seeing a deer - then the hunting is really getting good.
