Going to start a spin-off of CNC because I enjoy telling these stories and maybe it can help someone out!

We got our first call of the season tonight from a neighbor up the road. He had shot a buck slightly quartering away and did not get a pass through. Deer carried the arrow about 30 yards but dropped it in a creek so we couldn’t tell anything from the arrow. They tracked about 300 yards before losing blood and calling me. We show up and the only way in to last blood is to follow the blood trail so we took off. We got to where they lost blood and Shiloh took it about another 150 yards and came back and checked in with us then took off again. When she did this I went to where she was going snd started picking up blood. Another few hundred yards and she’s about 70 yards in front of us and I hear her bark just a few times so I knew she found the deer and it was still alive. Before we get to it it jumps and runs another 200 yards before she can stop it. Again it breaks when we get close and went about 60 yards and somehow managed to get its back leg hung in a root sticking up and it couldn’t get out so we was able to slide in and get Shiloh and safely take care of the buck. The shot ended up getting guts liver and possibly a lung depending on how hard it was quartered. Great first track with a little excitement but we all made it out without any injuries.

Good job! How much time between shot and jumping the deer with the dog first time?

Right around 4 hours. I would’ve liked to have waited longer before going in but time just didn’t allow for it on this one

Track 2 for the season was a direct call from a buddy. Shot a doe at 9 yards and had gut matter on the arrow when he checked. We gave it 6 1/2 hours before we headed out. Got there and it took Shiloh a few minutes of circles before she straightened it out and started working it real slow. We started finding blood about 25 yards in and it steadily got better. Deer only went 100 yards and was done. She was quartering to him and he didn’t realize it and shot went in high shoulder and came out low guts. Not a bad shot at all the guts just plugged the exit and the entry was too high to bleed much. Coyotes had beat us to it but had only got a little bit of the butt so we were still able to get the back straps. I’m assuming the coyote scent has something to do with why she worked so slow but who knows. 2 for 2 on the year!

Track 3
Shoulder shot on a doe with a rage. Got about 4-5 inches of penetration. I had very low hopes for this track being found but we gave it a go anyways. Tracked a long ways with no recovery as expected

Shoulder shots are one of the most common calls during bow season.......It's pretty rare for those to have a dead deer to be found. You never know though.....Good job checking it out. thumbup

You’re right. I feel bad if I don’t go check them to make sure but most end the same way

Between every friend I have getting married during deer season and not getting many of calls I finally got to go on another tonight. Hunter shot a doe and found gut matter at the hit aight and backed out. Waited 5 hours and went in. Short 100 yard track to a dead deer. Shot went in center of shoulder and came out 6 inches behind the offside shoulder. Not sure where the gut matter came from because it was a pretty perfect shot. It’s nice to have these easy tracks every once in a while
