Well, the wife and I are finally heading up this weekend to fish. Never even seen the lake before. I read where the FLW regional was a little tuff. I don’t tournament fish anymore, wife and I just fish for the love of it.

Fall transition on wheeler can be tough.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Shakey head on some rock, top water early, below the tail race, plenty of options. Good luck

Typically the topwater bite is good in the stump flats right now. And shad should be moving into the back of the creeks on the lower end, which helps the smallmouth bite.

Smaller profile, Small bladed spinner bait has worked well in past when the shad reach the backs of creeks

I fish Cotaco and limestone creeks a lot this time of year. All east of the I65 bridge. Decatur flats are good as-well as flint creek

Thanks for info. I don’t know where anything y’all said is with exception of First Creek and Elk River. I’ll search map. I’m sure we will have a good time and catch some fish. Heck, how hard is it to find fish on 50,000 acres of water and fool something with a brain the size of a pencil eraser to bite a fake lure 😜

Fished from 1:00-6:00pm Friday when a storm rolled in and ran us off the lake. Caught 12 of a mix bag. Saturday morning it was freaking windy, windy with the lake so ruff I couldn't cross the river without getting the wife and myself soaking wet and she doesn't play that ruff riding business nor does my spine anymore. We caught 9 by mid day and said the heck with it. Went back Sunday morning and fished from daylight until 10:00 and I had to go check out of lodge and pick up my wife. Only caught 4 Sunday morning. All in all had 25 bass with 7 being small mouth which is what I was hoping to catch. It was a good trip, glad I went. I'll go back. I will not stay at the Jo Wheeler lodge again as our room smelled terrible, there were stink bugs crawling on walls and the bed every so often. Also between the dehumidifier that kicked on and off and the air conditioner cycling it was just too noisy to sleep.

Stayed at the park one time and it was bad then because of other guest letting their kids run wild.
I prefer Decatur Harbor area but to each his own. That was one heck of a front you caught. Was
thinking about you. Glad you got bit. It’s a good lake. 👍

The big difference between the Coosa and the Tennessee is if there’s wind in the forecast it’s
best to trailer to your fishing spots or get wet. I ran a 21 foot Ranger 390V with a 200 merc. It handled
big water pretty good as I’m sure your Triton does but waves or waves and their rough on an
old mans back.😁

Next time go over to the other side of the river and stay at the Joe Wheeler cabins. They are just older houses that were once used to house construction crews, but now the park rents them out. Ours wasn't in the best of shape, but it was quiet and peaceful with a comfortable bed. More than adequate for a fishing trip.
