That’s weird to me. Mine stays covered too but it is never rusted shut. Possibly a spot or two of rust if not used in a month or so but never rusted over or shut. I’ve considered the newer tops though
Don't blame me for your bad decision-

I've got the old school cast iron daisy wheel and every time I use it, it's rusted shut, even though it stays covered. Are the new stainless ones the way to go? It’s actually easy. When you are done cooking put the dome lid on and put your daisy wheel on the grate. Close it up for the night.

I replaced my daisy wheel with the smoke ware vented chimney cap. It’s stainless, and I feel like it gives me more control. Also it vents out the sides and not the top. X2. I went with the Smoke Ware several years ago, and have never looked back.

When I had my Egg I placed The daisy wheel inside the egg while still hot and placed the cap on top to seal it off.

I have a stainless one as well as one of the new single disc dampers and I prefer the stainless damper hands down. Be careful though if you happen to leave it uncovered and big wind comes along. This happened to me at the lake and it lift my cover off and dropped in the lake for me. Fortunately, it was only about 12' deep where it landed and one of my boys dove down to get it for a couple weeks later. Good as new.
