I sprayed my clover with clethodim at beginning of summer. I've mowed it once and will mow it again soon. Grasses coming back. Should I hit again with cleth? Seems awfully hot to stress clover now. Unsure. Thanks.

I'm not the clover pro on here, but I've got most of my plots in Durana. I spray twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Mine needs it right now, but I'm not going to mow or spray it until the heat breaks. Actually, the weeds may be helping keep it partially shaded.

16 Oz per acre/year based on my memory, check the label to be sure. I'd wait for forecasted rain and cooler temps.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I just sprayed mine again. Spot sprayed it, because I cut it a couple weeks ago. I prefer to kill grass because its just a pita to control.

I am starting over on a couple fields too. Plan to plant clover in them, so I want to make sure they are sprayed well before I even start planting.

I sprayed mine with clethodim and a low rate of 1.5 oz/gal of glyphosate a few days ago. Since we’re having sub 90 degree temps I think it’ll be fine. The grasses are yellowing and the clover is still green and erect. I’ve had a difficult time controlling grass with cleth alone. It needs a little help. I do not like using that mix in drought and above 90 degrees.

To answer your question I prefer to mow once I get a stand thick enough to shade out competition. That may require more than one herbicide treatment per growing season.

Thoughts on just spraying 1.5oz/gal of glyphosate (without the clethodim) on a clover stand to control grasses? How do you think that would work out with theses sub 90 temps for the next 10 days it looks like.

Well. I hate to give you that recommendation and it go bad. I’ve had generally good success spraying clover with up to 2 oz/acre of gly. Never on newly established or stressed stands. As long as soil moisture isn’t too dry you should be ok. But like I said I’m not making you an official recommendation. 😁

Fair enough! I’ve got a little one acre stand im going to try it on... if it dies I’ll disk and top sow some wheat for the doves. Win win!

I’ve started throwing in a little gly because I don’t always get a good kill with just cleth. It seems to stress the grass and knock it back only to return by the root within a few weeks. Using a surfactant with gly should knock out some of the stemmy stuff and broadleaves too.

I use the 1.5 quarts/ acre fly and like it on mature clover, but like Matt said, dont use it on stressed clover. I haven't used cleth in years.

I generally like to use a crop oil adjuvant with this family of herbicides (dims and fops). Some labels recommend it. Likely will yellow clovers.

If you do the things you need to do when you need to do them then someday you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them.

I dont add any additional surfactant to gly, never have, and always get a good kill. I actually mix my gly 2ozs/gallon.

I have had pretty good results with cleth but I mix in some surfactant from TS. Or soap. I haven't tried the AMS stuff in it yet.

I mix that at .5 oz per gallon in my 26 gallon ATV sprayer. It takes it a little bit to kill stuff, but when it does, its dead.

What determines “established” stand of clover?

I planted some last fall and overseeded in the spring. Could that handle some gly?

Also I’ve got chicory mixed in so would the gly kill it? Thanks

I consider spring clover that was planted the previous fall, established clover. Theses are perennial plantings that we're talking about.
