You inspired me to look for one of mine that dates back to 1977. I wasted a lot of time and money trying to catch a big striper before getting these. That is on the porch of the married student's housing in Auburn, and it is long since torn down. I had no place at all to put them; I stuck them in the bathtub and then got everyone I knew to come by and look at them.

Mine came from Erwin Shoals where the Tallapoosa river runs into Lake Martin. I had a jonboat with a very small trolling motor and had to drag it across an island to get to where the fish were. It would kill me today to go through all of that.

I think I was 13 in this one, and those fish came from Merritt's Mill Pond near Marianna, FL on a 2 day trip. The place was absolute wilderness back then, but it looks like there is a city around it now. I think this is the only picture that I have of the homemade camper that my father built from a truck body, though you can't see all of it. It's also the only picture I have of Sport, who isn't posing very well but he was a fine bird dog. I can see a corner of the 65 Impala that we used to pull the camper. It looks like my parents didn't worry too much about my pants being long enough; I had probably hit a growth spurt.

I remember my father catching the big grinnel at the bottom of the stringer. He got the fish into the boat and then he jumped right out and he had to fight him some more. Grinnels and gars were always brought home and buried in the garden. No sense wasting fertilizer.

Great picture. Caught a few mud fish in my time. They will destroy a spinner bait down at the big O.
Saw a few mounted down at Jack Wingates Lunker Lodge on Seminole. Almost prehistoric looking.👍

Thanks, there was a lot of ingenuity that went into building that camper. It was rare to see any sort of camper in our area in those days, and I don't think my dad had ever seen one made from a truck body before. He just somehow conceived the idea and drew it out, then built it. And a 65 Impala with a 283 in it was not exactly the ideal tow vehicle, but it worked. He had a 51 Chevy pickup that he would use to pull it on short trips, but it would probably not have held together for a trip to FL. It would jump out of high gear often, so you had to drive with one hand on the gear shifter to hold it down.

Necessity is for sure the mother of invention.
