I just put in an order for WMS brassica blend.

Anybody use this before? How did it do? First time planting anything I hope I picked something decent.

Already have a soil test kit just have to get some soil and ship it. I looked at a soil test probe and wow $100? I think I'll use a shovel lol.

I have use WMS Deer Magnant for a number of years. It is a GREAT seed. It is a mix and has plenty of Brassica seed in the mix. Our club is just up the road from Lee County. I would try this mix as it will last all fall, winter and spring. It has six or eight different seed in it.

Another good blend is Buck Busters if you can find it.

WMS only had brassica blend in stock. I didn't see anything local I was looking for. I looked at green cover seed fall release blend but it was $40 shipping. I was also looking at some biologic something. I ordered the brassica blend from WMS though.

I never heard of buck busters I'll give them a look even though I probably won't be ordering anything else for a while now.

I don't have a tractor but I do have a walk behind tiller. I think it's going to be a job clearing and planting just a tenth or a quarter acre.

If you have good soil and sunlight it will probably grow. I tried I one year and the deer ate all the brassicas as soon as they came up and basically killed everything. If it’s a wet area it will not do good at all or if it’s a shaded area that doesn’t see a lot of sunlight they won’t do good. I started buying what brassicas I wanted and mixing them with whatever I plant

I got my brassica blend from Universal Seed last year. I think it was 8.50 per 5 pound bag. It did really well. I am waiting for their price list this year. The brassy bucks blend at the co=op went up to 16 bucks a bag. No thanks.

I need to get with the program and run out there before gun season starts and broadcast some nitrogen this year.

Seems like our deer don’t know what to do with brassicas. I’ve heard some say they have to learn to like them or they may have a bitter taste. Anyone else seen this? looks like the Mid west and northern deer tears them up from footage I’ve seen. Is there a “learning curve “ with purple tops, radishes , rape, etc? I like having them in a blend for the benefits like tonage, organic matter, breaking up hard pans , etc but i wish the deer would yank them up like I’ve seen elsewhere

How do you make your own blend anyways?

If one seed says 10 lbs per acre and another says 5 lbs per acre for example?

I don't think you would plant 15 lbs per acre.

What's the ratio or formula if you will?

Use the seed rate per acre to determine the poundage and % composition of each plant. Percentages have to add up to 100%

A little of this and a little of that all mixed up and put it out is the way I thought it went in Alabama.

1-2 lbs of brassicas per acre is all you need in a mix.....

Several co-ops and several seed stores will carry WMS. I would find one and wait till they get stock in to buy some. Much cheaper that way. Late Aug and they will be in stock. Brassicas will not be at its best until you have a good frost or two. They they taste like sugar to deer. That is the reason you need to buy a blended seed like deer magnet so that other seeds feed the deer in early fall and brassicas feeds the deer in Dec. Jan and Feb.
