a family member gave us a few banana peppers from their garden, supposedly from the same plant. 1 was pretty damn hot, the rest had zero heat at all...literally almost flavorless. I've never gotten a hot banana pepper before and the Googles says that even the hottest banana peppers are less than 1/5th the heat of the average jalapeno. This one was every bit as hot as a jalapeno....I thought that was weird, especially when they came off the same plant....

I used to grow sweet banana peppers all the time, every now and then one off the same plant would be hot like that.

I’ve got 6 sweet banana pepper plants. Pulled one the other evening right before supper. Bit into that joker when I sat down to eat and it lit my ass up.

I have sweet and hot banana pepper plants in my garden. I planted late so have t had a harvest yet but should in the next couple days. I’ve also heard that if you plant any kind of sweet pepper near any hot peppers there is a chance of cross pollination making the sweet peppers hotter

I've had this happen before and I always assumed it had something to do with the other hot peppers I had stacked in my raised bed with them

I was always told that the cross pollination thing really only effects peppers on next years crop, if you keep the seeds.

My dad used to plant banana peppers next to hot peppers on purpose so they’d be a little hotter. If you plant em near a hot pepper, they will have some heat to em.

It may, but I can assure you it effects the crop of peppers next to it in that same planting.
Learned that through experience when I first started planting a garden.

Yellow crook neck squash will cross pollinate with Zucchini too.

Cross pollination can only affect the next generation. The cross pollination is in the seeds not the fruit of the present plant. The cross pollination would show up in the next plants fruit. Any trait in the present fruit is from the pollination that made the seed that made that plant.

My granddad gave me some banana peppers the other day. I cut a couple up for my kids to try with their supper. My son ate 2 or 3 bites and liked them. He grabbed another one and in about 5 seconds started freaking out saying it was hot.

I thought he was just kidding around so I tried a few slices and after eating a few I got a hot one too. Not bad hot but definitely hot for a kid. I asked my granddad about it and he said they were all off of the same plant

If it changes the seeds, and you eat the seeds, couldn't that potentially make this years pepper hotter?

I don't know, I've heard hot peppers nearby does and doesn't.

A guy at work brought in some peppers a few years ago that he said were supposed to be hot. another fella that likes hot peppers cut off a little piece and said that it wasn't hot at all. I though he was trying to fool me into eating a hot pepper, but I finally tried it and it tasted about like a bell pepper. He left it on the table until lunch time and ate another little piece and it lit his tail up? This was the same pepper, not another pepper from the same bag. I don't know how that would happen, but it did.

I doubt it, just a DNA code in the seed.
