I have a 3 y/o GSP lab mix and every time you put a leash on him he freaks out.. He cries like you are beating him and lays down.. What can I do to break him of this?

put the leash on for a few seconds and take it off, rinse and repeat a lot. Leave it on longer as time goes on.

Try to do something fun when you put it on him.......or maybe try giving him a treat associated with it......Have you ever done anything in the past with him with a leash? It sounds like he is either scared of it or has a negative association with it.

When I have dogs that have trouble getting use to being on a lead I put them on a chain for a few hours a day. I know some people don’t like chaining out dogs but if I can’t get one to calm down on a lead then I use it as a tool and has worked for me. Make sure it’s in a shaded spot and nothing to get tangled up in the chain.

A treat as soon as the dog does what you want then praise and pet.eventually eliminate the treat and praise as time goes.actually very easy just soon as you put leash on give treat, pet, praise.over time they associate leash with good things

This is the key to training a dog to do anything. An example is we used pepperoni and praise when we got ours to go in the crate at night. Now if she sees my wife get the pepperoni out of the fridge she goes and gets in her crate. Even when my wife is just getting some to snack on for herself.

That's funny.its amazing how smart they are and easy to train once you learn to think like they do.it kills me people who yell at or hit there dog thinking it's accomplishing anything.most are very easy to train with a little effort.
Still have trouble with my male pissing in house marking his territory occasionally even at almost 4 years old and my girl dog will tear your azz up while trying to trim her nails or clean her ears but we learned to cover her face and all is good. they are 120lb and 130lb rotts .very good dogs but have there stubbornness like anything

Have you tried a halter with a leash loop attached to that instead of a collar?

I really like a halter due to my 2 Bostons having a short neck and I dont want to put pressure on their esophagus. A halter lets me put a leash on them and they do just fine. I got 2 off of some website that has the velcro removable side tags with their names on it...you can get your phone # imprinted on it if you wanted, etc . It also has a type of handle loop on top that you can pick your dog up with too. I think they were $19.00 each or close to that.

This is a true... but a shock collar works even better in my opinion. You have to know what you are doing though.

I had aGSP/Lab when I was a kid. Best hunting dog ever set foot on earth. Ducks, quail or pheasants.
