The 629 for sale in the classifieds got me to wondering......what's a 686 (no dash) with a 6" barrel worth theses days? With the original box and paperwork including the oily paper, and it appears as unfired condition. I know we have several S&W aficionados, maybe even call them connoisseurs, here on Aldeer. What say ye, Aldeer experts?

I'm very familiar with the 686.
Yes it is the same model, but it is not the same gun.
Saying that gun is the same as a no dash 686 is like saying the new Bronco is the same truck as the original

I’m familiar as well but we don’t have to have a contest. I own both the pre-lock that was left to me and a newer one with, and outside of the lock, I find them very similar weapons which is what the OP is asking. The newer 686 seems to be more accurate with 38’s but it might be the shooter! I find the j lock on Remington shotguns annoying too. It never really caused any issues with functionality in the express vs. the older Wingmasters or the expresses without. They’re all 870’s though...don’t lose sight of facts.

If your opinion differs, fine. To each his own.

The OP asked about value. Someone trying to get a deal is going to reference the newer 686 prices so it’s good to be educated.

I’d say $1000 from what I’ve seen. Possibly more.

XVIII,

You're right, we don't have to have a contest. That wasn't what I was trying to do.
I was merely pointing out the older guns are much more desirable than the new ones.

That being said, your 870 analogy isn't relevant. The parts of and old Wingmaster will swap into a newer express. They ARE the same gun.
The internals of a no dash 686 and the new ones will not.
The old gun has firing pin - the correct term is hammer nose - on the hammer.
The new guns have the firing pin mounted in the frame.
There are many other internal differences as well.
Take both of your apart and swap the internals and see if either will function...They won't

I am not trying to argue with you, but you took issue with me saying they aren't the same gun.

Technically, they are, but there are many difference that make the older guns more desirable and more valuable than the one you posted in what seemed to me as an attempt to put a value on the OPs gun.
My point was simply, you cannot compare the two guns.

I’ve never seen a no dash 686 sell for less than $1k. It’s hard to even find them for sale because people don’t want to get rid of them.

I personally disagree with comparing new production 686 with a no dash. That’s being disingenuous to the actual value of the gun. The value of a no dash 686 is not affected whatsoever by what new production 686’s are selling for because the only commonality is the Company and the chambering.

Does this opinion earn me a discount? smile
