My 5 year old is a pretty good shot with his .22 but I want to let him try for a bobcat or coyote. I'm not real sure a .22 would be the best fit for him on anything bigger than squirrels. He right at 40 lbs and I don't want him to develop bad habits from shooting a rifle that kicks too much. Been looking at a .22 mag but I still don't know if that would be enough. What caliber would you suggest for him?

You think a Rossi 223/410 combo would be a good place to start?

I have a savage Bmag in 17 wsm that shoots really good and ammo was cheap not sure now as I haven’t bought any but it will put the smack on a coyote or dog with no felt recoil.

Sorry Phil - been out a few days - I think the 223 be great - we got to borrow a youth model - it was light - no kick and my kid killed buck at about 160 yards w it - it would work on a bobcat

410 May work too

I've killed a bunch of Coyotes with a 17HMR but I think the 22 mag does a little better and has more ammo selection obviously. They both work for 100 yard shots which you can't expect a kid to be shooting further than that sounds like he weighs 40 lbs so he's a little kid.

Moving up from there you are talking about .22 Hornet or 204 Ruger... something like that.

40lb little fella.... 17 or 22 Mag. Done.

I would also just go ahead and get a 223. My daughter is 13 now but she had no problems with a single shot 223 as young as about 7-8.

Dad had a .222 over a 12 gauge when I was growing up, and it was amazing. But I've got to ask the question - What on earth would a .222 do that a .223 wouldn't, except cost a lot more, make it hard to find ammo, and not have any bullets built for larger animals? The last bullet rolling around the floorboard of your buddy's truck console or tackle box will be a .22. The next to last will likely be a.223, or 7.62x39.

Get a 223. That way they won't outgrow it. And most important...ammo is common and cheap. Can't even find 22 mag ammo easy as 223. Least not where I been.
