Anyone know what one in good condition is worth?

I've killed most of my deer and pigs with a 788 in .308 Win. It's been a good rifle but I don't suggest you buy one.

The advantage to the design is the fast lock time which helps with accuracy but there's potentially several problems. So far so good on mine but here's what I don't like:
> The original birch stock on 788s have no checkering and a poor finish. I've replaced mine with one from Boyd's
> The magazine can rattle in its well and is not flush. Extra magazines can be hard to find.
> The safety has a screw that can ease out enough to make the slider along the receiver get moved to Fire if slightly bumped. Before you know it, you're walking around in an unsafe condition.
> The factory trigger breaks clean but is heavy. The pull on mine is 5 to 5.5 lbs and it's not adjustable.

Here's what I've read:

> The 788's were produced from 1967 to 1983 so you run the chance of getting one with a worn out barrel
> The bolt handles are soldiered on and have been known to break off if roughly used
> The extractor is small and can cause problems if not kept clean

My advice is to pass on the 788 and look at new .243s such as the Ruger American Predator. That way you'll get an adjustable trigger, flush-fit mag, and threaded barrel.

I'll flip to the other side of the coin.

Factory trigger was changed to a Timney
Put it into a Boyd's stock.
May be the most accurate rifle I own

I do wish I could buy a kit to change it to a BDL style floorplate.

UncleHuck. I've had my 788 since 1994 and will keep it as long as I can. Last year I considered putting in a Timney and that would provide a better safety. Dang, you may have cost me some money just by bringing up the subject.

But my Ruger American Predator in 6.5 CM is slightly more accurate.

EDIT: Just purchased a Timney for the old 788 from Midway USA ...

The 788 I had was an absolute TACK driver...with any ammo.

I'm getting sub MOA three-shot groups with my 788 even with the factory trigger. But that's at the bench off a bipod. The Timney is on backorder but hopefully it will make me more consistent when shooting in the field.

I had one in left hand that I regret selling.

Downside was the weight.

The trigger will help a lot. I have never owned a gun more accurate than the 2 I have owned.
Had a 7mag sendero that was close but no cigar.

Never seen a 788 that wouldn’t shoot. They were dirt cheap too.

Got one in a 308 carbine shoot good, would not mind having a 243.

agree on the weight. The older I get the more I think about buying a lighter rifle. Just hard to put it down I’ve killed so many critters with it
