I'm not looking to see if we have a world title, but how about a local title. I've never entered a contest, my uncle, a long time ago, told me that what we do doesn't translate to what the judges want.
I've been to a few contests, there is no way I would throw all that out there. Rodger Lee told me that what he does for the judges is different that what he does for turkeys. He sure did like to call a lot of the turkey was fired up. (maybe it was just that day). I've personally known two that have won world championships, Rodger and Larry Norton from Pennington. I haven't been to a contest in years.

I'll never forget sitting in the turkey woods and having some clown coming in on me.....it was the worst calling I'd ever heard. The cadence wasn't natural, the pitch was weird, it was just horrible. and I'm a not-very-good caller myself so when I think it's bad, it's baaaad. Dude was walking toward me up an old logging road but was around a bend in the road, out of sight. I'd already pulled my face mask down and set my gun across my lap when the dude finally came around the bend in the road............except it wasn't a dude. It was a damn hen. Reminds me of an old Phil Robertson line about "a hen mallard would never even place in a duck calling contest".

Son and I set up on fort Rucker early and heard the most awful racket over the ridge. Told my son that’s the worst caller I’ve ever heard. He said yeah he’s worse than you. I looked at phone to see if anyone had checked in the same area and nothing showing. About 15 minutes later we spotted a roost of hens and watched 5 or 6 fly down the other direction. Never felt bad about how bad my calling was after that.

Seems like there's multiple world championship calling contests each year...

Most folks' perception of what a turkey sounds like is based on someone else telling them how a turkey is supposed to sound. Andy many of those people are just going by what someone else before them said.

I've won a few calling titles over the years. That two that come to mind are "keep working on it" and "that didn't sound anything like a turkey".

No, I haven’t. Not by a long shot. What’s more, I don’t dare eat a turkey if he comes to my calling.

Nope. I’m sure there is somebody out there that has and struggles to kill turkeys, but I can assure you..... guys that win most of those contest kill more than smallpox did people. Not just good calling, but knowing when and how much along with good woodsmanship kills the fool out of turkeys.
Winning those contests comes from love of the sport and turkeys. Love of the sport and turkeys comes from spending a WHOLE LOT of time hunting, listening, and fooling with turkeys.

Semo I seen world champ struggle and hav very hard time kill turkeys one year

And a lot of people that kill lot hav hole bunch of gobs to hunt - I been on both sides of that fence and when turkeys were plentiful it was easy and if u only got 1-2 property line birds to hunt and he getn hammered from other side too - may not be a tag out season 🤣

I’m awful but every time I hunt with Joe we seem to kill one 😁. Setting around a campfire and listening to him owl is pretty surreal.
