Last fall when my grandfather passed away we inherited his old Remington 742 chambered in 6mm Remington with a weaver mount. Had some junk red dot on it (dont remember the make) and im looking to put a quick eye relief or low power scope on it so it can be a good walking around gun. Any suggestions?

3-9 Redfield Widefield on JB Holden Ironsighters is early 70's old school. Of course the Redfield would be fogged up.

SMH. I still have a tasco on one of mine. It came on the rifle in the early 80's. Pretty sure it's gloss too. Still holds zero and works fine. Ya'll are just mean.

I may have a set of see-through mounts left for a 742 in one of my boxes. If you aren't in a hurry, I'll donate them to the project once I find them. They are old enough that the screws are all slotted

PM your address and I'll look.

I had seethru mounts on my 742 for years. I never used my iron sights, not one time. Also, if you put a 50mm scope on it with the seethru mounts you wont be able to see hardly anything under the scope. I would use the gun just like any other deer rifle, so put the same scope on it youd put on any other deer rifle. The one great benefit of the 742 is you can get that second shot off very fast. Oddly enough, ive never done that either. Never needed to. Good luck with it. I hope you enjoy your 742, ive sure enioyed mine. They are deer killing machines.

Mine's on a ruger 77 in 7 mag. Not see through mounts though. It was the first rifle I had ever seen with no sights other than the optic.

Killed my first deer with a set of Holden Ironsighters and a Weaver 3-9 set up. Quite a few deer fell to that scope, between my great uncle and pawpaw... good times.

Mine has a Leupold Straight 6. Late 70s put on by my father.

My BAR 06 had Holdens holding a 4X Weaver. I killed one 425 yards, resting on a fence post with that set up. By far best shot I ever made on a deer.
