Kinda goofy idea, but I wanted to get y'alls opinions on my situation here at the house. We had 2 acres forestry mulched back in the winter and I would like to try a little plot. There is some new growth that I will be cutting before the plot happens. My questions are, do you think I can have any germination by just throwing seed down on basically wood chips before a good rain? Should I throw seeds, then mow the new growth? Should I run my little ATV disc through a few times before I throw seed? Remember, this acreage was forestry mulched so there are stumps flush to the ground. I'm just curious if the wood chips will hold enough moisture for germination, and if a good rain would work the seeds down in the mulch. Thoughts?

I would put extra seed to it but rye grain would be my top pick. I’ve seen it done with fairly decent results on fresh log landings that are almost devoid of any topsoil

I'm definitely going with rye grain...may do a little clover just to see if it comes up.

Ive seen it take several years for grass to grow where a stump has been ground. Granted the mulch would probably be deeper than what you have. Im betting you will have a poor stand at best. Id try it if I was you though, just to see.

Maybe a rapid conversion to ash would help ? Definitely need to have your conditions right to make it go. This was a grassy stand with weeds so it was relatively easy.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I have a similar situation behind my camp. I had around 2 acres mulched back in April that was mostly sweet gums mixed with heavily thinned pines. Left the pines and have been trying to find right mixture to kill the sweet gums that are resprouting. Haven't had much luck so going to burn in Nov and then broadcast rye

Polaris AC is generic Imazapyr. About $65/quart at the Co-op.

Imazapyr is a soil sterilant, essentially. Which means nothing will grow afterwards. Just a fair warning to the OP.

Oh believe me, I ain't spraying crap out there...sapplings ain't growing in the winter enough to matter anyway. I will just be amazed if I get some growth going with rye and clover.

I pulled the trigger yesterday afternoon on my little plot at the house. I mowed half of it before I spread seed and fertilizer, then half after just to see if it makes a difference. I ran my little ATV disc over all of it, it didn't really cut in but I think it helped push the seeds into the mulch. Already had good moisture before I planted due to showers yesterday, and suppose to get more rain today. I'll see if my little experiment works in a week or so, I'm excited to see.
