Never hunted this WMA before but I see a lot of gas well roads on google earth. Are all these open to the public or just the road going to the shooting range?

I believe they opened all of the gates last week, 9/1. So you should be able to access most if not all of the WMA.

Some of the gates will be open through hunting season and some will remain locked. You just have to drive around and see.

If you see a black GMC Sierra parked at one of the gates you will probably want to hunt there. Means there is a big deer in there close by. smile

lol. I'll be sure to bird dog that truck. Dumb question but will they allow you to camp in there overnight during hunting season?

Most gates stay closed. A few are open for longer roads. No camping other than in the designated campgrounds.

Thanks for the info. Buddy of mine had an idea of doing a canoe/camping/Turkey hunting trip down the river from Hwy 52 down to the new park on River rd. But it sounds like that is a negative. I'm guessing you can canoe and camp but just not hunt because people do that all the time.

I did some riding around. Peel Rd down from the range looks good but im guessing it is crazy busy come season. Love the woods though.

Just a word of advice.... don’t name specifics about the public properties you plan to hunt. Unless you like a crowd. There’s Some damn vultures around that will be on your spot like a carcass

I never had a hard time getting away from people out there and saw quite a few deer, but I never hunted any of the gun hunts which I'm sure is a completely different story.

I've only hunted a handful of times on Cahaba during deer season but I saw deer every time I hunted. I just don't like not knowing where other hunters may be. You think you're the only one in the area until you hear shots just over the ridge...

That's my worry as well. It would almost be nice to have the hunters show up on a live mapping app as points so you'd know where each other were. But that would go over about like a lead balloon with most hunters. lol

I hunted it once, thought I was away from everyone till this one idot comes walking down a firebreak at 4:30pm. He didn't even see me till I spoke to him. Never saw a deer, gee wonder why. I was a long way from any road too.
