So I haven’t shot doves in awhile.

Here’s the scenario...... you have an old gravel pit that has ton of bare ground. Is spreading wheat illegal or legal?
Thanks.... figured some better at interpreting the law could chime in.
It could be scattered on hillside to prevent erosion?

I would say not even close to being legal.

If it’s disked up (prepared) you’ll have less of a chance of getting a ticket

Right......the catch phrase is something like "normal agricultural practices". You probably need to at least pretend to prep the field for planting.

It'd better be well prepared. You cant just scratch the gravel with a disk and toss out 200lb/acre of wheat. That's pretty much a guarnateed ticket if the GW happens to stop in for a visit.

You can absolutely shoot a waterhole or roost site all you want, you just cant put out wheat, sesame, cracked corn or any other kind of bait around it.

Now I did hear once of a group of younger guys rolling out some big strips of visqueen on a powerline near a bunch of thinned pines and covering it with cracked corn. Thursday afternoon rumor has it that they went out and rolled up the visqueen and what was left of the cracked corn, and then went in there on Saturday and burned up some barrels on birds. Just a rumor though and something I heard about years ago. rolleyes

I've heard that this same principle works with kiddie pools and ducks on backwoods swamps.....but once again just rumors 😁

Seriously I would ask the local GW......ask him to come look at it and let him tell you what you can get by with.

Used to love to shoot on Sat. with friends, and had some decent state youth hunts at Draper I took kids on when they were young.
I think I'll leave the gravel pit as it is..................get between waterhole and large thickets of roosting pines around it.
Take momma and let her shoot a few caps anyway. Always a few birds around the gravel.

I've heard that visqueen story before. Pretty ingenious.

The above referenced incidents involving visqueen may or may not have taken place in south central Baldwin county 20-25 yrs ago.

a lot of times the federal charges are less than same charge in state court because feds do not charge court costs on top of fines.
