Based on the pic I saw the Middle 40% of it is completely gone. It’ll be closed for another year at least based on past construction performance.

Ivan took it out in 04 and it didn't reopen until 09. No way it will reopen in a year. It will probably have to be completely demo'd and rebuilt... if it took that much of the pier completely out, no telling how much of the structure has damage that wasn't wiped out.

I hope they knew what they were doing with insurance coverage. Otherwise it’s going to be a massive hit to us tax payers

Question... if oil rigs can be built to withstand hurricanes year after years the why would you go cheap on a gulf pier?

It will be 4- 6 months before engineering will have the newest bid ready no doubt Then another delay to let the bids...then to award the bid...in a market where there will be way more money in hurricane work than a state pier. Then the new pilings will have to be fabbed and who knows how much more damage they might find. Hopefully they will let fisherman use what there is of the pier that is safe until...
Didn't here this just had about 25 years working in the middle of the process...My guess 2022. hope I'm wrong! and we can celebrate!

Cheap? When the pier was rebuilt after Ivan destroyed it in 2004 (reopened in 2009), the price tag was almost $15 MILLION. The renovations that were just completed hit the $2.4 MILLION mark. I don't know what your idea of cheap is, but over $17 MILLION is far from cheap.

These pics were taken the afternoon of Sept 14...over 24 hrs before landfall. Waves were already reaching the bottom of the pier deck. I can only imagine how high the waves were the closer the storm got. The power of water is something else
The last pic was the morning of the 15th
