Look for the wood stocked version of the Beretta A-300, which is probably the best new gun you'll find at that price point.
Simmons ought to either have one in stock or be able to get it quickly.

Order one online (avoid sales tax, better selection and price) and pay the pawn shop or local gun store $25 to do the FFL paperwork.

I have one of these and it is a great gun. Have dove hunted with it for three years now. If you can find one, believe he would like it.

Thanks for all the replies. Ended up getting a Stoeger M3000 walnut/burnt bronze. Not my taste but my other son says he will like it.
