For the last several years one project I have been working on is pushing back tree and woody growth and widening my road/field edges.I am trying to get them all 20-30 foot wide which is as far as my wand sprayer will go if wind is right.Last year I had a mulcher out and actually straightened this tree edge so I would have about 250 yards to hunt on both the north and west lines of this 40 which is 6 year old planted pines.I think it turned out pretty good as there was some good stuff in the seed bank.Lots of free food and lots of fawning cover.

One plant that exploded was Partridge Pea which is highly browsed in my area.

In addition to my roads I also plant a 20-30 foot wide buffer around the perimeter of my one big field with a mix of peas, vining soybeans, sorghum, sunflowers, etc., mainly to benefit Quail and as a secondary source of food and cover. At his point they have left the peas/beans in here alone because they have to work for it, unlike the adjoining bean field.

I am hoping the deer will use this as a a travel corridor between the 220 acres of 4-5 year unplanted clearcut on my west, acroos my open pasture/fields to the creek smz to the east.

Biggest deer I ever killed was crossing a road - shot it while it was crossing.

Hunt the wind - leave it better than you found it - love your neighbor as you love your self

Been after my Wife's Dad for years to leave his roads at least 30' wide when replanting pines, I'd rather see 40'. More daylight not only equals better habitat, but your roads stay drier and you don't have to fight cutting ROW when the trees get bigger.

I have become a believer in hunting roads/lanes and travel corridors.Until a few years ago I was pretty happy to just sit in a food plot box because I like to see deer,it was easy/comfortable and relaxing because shots were usually not rushed. Then two years ago I got my two largest bucks ever out of the same stand on a creek crossing.Don't see a lot of deer out of that stand and don't see them for long, but if I did there was a good possibilty it would be a racked buck.I passed three fine 3.5 year olds from the same stand last year.

My favorite spot combines both food plots and lanes/roads.View east, end of plot about 300 yards.

View north.About 250 yards to bend in road.

This is on a property I was on yesterday. A good example of a road that is planted too close.

I agree.Unfortunately at that stage it would be difficult to do anything about it.
