For the people that use some type of ATV spreader have any of you ever figured out a way to keep the fertilizer from seizing the motor up after a year or two of use.

Nope! Somehow the dust has to penetrate the motor and they will lock up.

Or 3-1 oil

If it’s seized up. Squirt at shaft and turn by hand. It’ll free up. Toggle the on off switch. When it breaks loose you’ll know it

I have tried everything I can think of and they still go out. I have turned them upside down and sprayed clean so water wouldn't run down into the shaft, but that didn't work. Placed a rubber tube over the shaft so the dust couldn't get into the motor housing, that didn't work either. I now just clean as best I can and then break it loose when I get ready to plant the next year. If it don't break loose, or is toast, I just change out the motor.

We used to pour burned motor oil into our metal fertilizer hoppers when I was a kid. This worked good for several years but eventually they rusted out. I don't think there is a way to keep fertilizer from ruining metal parts.

I've got a Moultrie that's at least 15 years old and still works ok. I throw a little burnt motor oil in it after using fertilizer, and don't see any rust. I mainly spread clover and Ammonia nitrate with it, but I have used it a few times with t13.

The fertilizer has been much harder on the ATV. I always wash it thoroughly after spreading fertilizer, but there is still a lot of rust under the front end.

Stop it no. Add some time to it yes.
Take a tube of the cheapest grease you can find. Smear it all over the out side of the motor. After done with the spreader wipe it off. it helps to keep the fertilizer dust from entering the motor. Then we pour used oil all over the metal parts and motor shaft. This has helped the little moultrie ones to last longer and not seize up.
By now you would think someone would have come up with a belt driven thrower where the motor was completely sealed and not directly in, or under the sling plate and out of the dusting.

As others said, you can delay it but eventually they'll fail. We clean thoroughly after each use and then give a heavy dose of oil when putting away. Can find replacement motors for about $40 if I remember correctly.

I have two Moultrie spreaders one about 10 years old one barely used. I clean them as best I can after spreading fertilizer. The old one I have replaced the bearings in it 2-3 times. They have 2 small bearings you can replace for 5-6 dollars. But eventually more stuff besides the bearings get corroded and you can’t fix it. I ordered a new motor yesterday from Moultrie. I tried a cheaper motor $20 I am pretty sure was a feeder motor from amazon but the spinner plate didn’t fit right and you can’t replace the beau in it it lasted one year.

I just don’t put water on mine ever. Even then if I get three or four years I’m happy. You can buy a replacement motor at Academy for about $20. I think it’s made for feeders but it fits my 50 lb. Moultrie spreader perfectly. After sitting all off season it inevitably will be seized up. I just spray some 3&1 oil down the shaft and work it by hand till it’s spinning freely.

Yeah, get a pull-behind with gear-driven spinner.

Of course, wash it after use. Then, I spray WD-40 on the shaft while it's running before I store it and after I get ready to use it again. I've gotten almost 10 years out of a moultrie.

Have thought about going that route. If I only had a couple big fields I already would have. With 12-14 fields and all them a good distance apart on rough roads I just think it would be a worse hassle getting from field to field.

No unfortunately, I average 3 seasons with the motor, got 4 seasons out of one, and then one season out of another.
I spray it with WD-40 to try to keep it from seizing up. I think that helps.
