Got 6 fields planted Friday afternoon about 4 acres in total. They got rain both friday and Saturday afternoon so hopefully they will get a good jump on the weeds.

One of my chufa patches has tons of morning glory popping up. What kind of herbicide do I need to use to get rid of it? Application rate?

24D-B will kill the morning glories. Follow the instructions on the box.

A quart of 24D-B and 10/oz of Clethodim per acre has worked well for me in keeping my chufas weed free.

Do you use any surfactant in that mix?

If I have some at the barn I do and if not I don't. I have never been able to tell a major difference when using it versus when not using it. I am sure someone will be along to tell me I am a DA but that is just my observation.

I do not use 24D-B when spraying my chufa but I always use around 16oz Per 25 gallons of an 80/20 non-ionic surfactant with my milestone/clethodim mix.

I sure wouldn't call you names for experimenting outside the box. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of recent herbicide research on chufas, so the only way to learn anything new is for us hunters to figure it out. I will admit that I have never tried spraying without some sort of surfactant. All the Ag guys say to use it, and I think there has been research that proves that herbicides benefit from it. The cost is pretty low, so I have just always used it. I put a pint of 80/20 in the 25 gallon tank, and it seems like that works. But I have never tried a controlled experiment, testing one area with it and another without it. I've heard folks swear that Dawn works just as well, but I would think farmers would be using Dawn if that were true.

We can figure out some things on our plots, but most of us can never carry out a true experiment like they do in agricultural research. I think it's better on something like surfactants to just trust the research.

Now on something like the best herbicides for chufas, I haven't found much research. All the studies I've been able to find were from the 40s and 50s, and I don't know any way to figure that out except by comparing results with other chufa growers. Those of you using 2,4-Db for broadleaf control - have you tried Milestone and found it not as good? My experience is that while both will work, Milestone is much less likely to damage the chufas. I have found that the dosage of 2,4-Db has to be just right. Too much will damage the chufas and too little won't control the weeds. And the bad thing is that the amount to use will vary depending on the soil, and especially how much rain we get.

But that is just my experience in just 2 counties, and it may not be consistently true in other areas. What have you found in your area?

It would surely be nice if some of the taxpayer and hunter funded research would focus on practical matters like this that could actually help turkeys, but I don't think that is gonna happen.

Well I am going to try it out this weekend, I got 24DB-200 for the coop and Clethodim. I am going to try it out at a quart of 24db-200 and 10oz of Cleth. The patches are exactly 2 weeks old and have got plenty of rain. We will see.

I usually use a pint of 80/20 but there has been several times I got to the farm only to find out we were out of surfactant and being I had spraying chufas on my mind I proceeded without the surfactant. In fact this happened just last week and as of yesterday everything I sprayed had turned yellow(except the chufas) so I am assuming it is going to work ok without the surfactant. That being said I would certainly recommend using an 80/20 surfactant because it is relatively cheap and like you mentioned the true ag guys recommend it and I can assure you they know a lot more than myself. I am still using 2,4-Db and not Milestone because the last time I bought the 2,4-Db I got a case of two 2.5gal jugs so when it is gone I will probably try Milestone.
