We have some fields that are planted in cotton most years and we broadcast our food plot seed on the field edges after the farmer has harvested the cotton and cut the stalks. This leaves our planting date dependent on when the farmer harvests the fields, which was late November last year and we had a crappy plot because we did not have much good growing time. Would broadcasting into the standing cotton around mid September be a good idea to get more growing time? I dont see what bad effect it would have on the farmer/cotton crop and it would give a lot more growing time - assuming the defoliant doesn't completely kill my plot crops.We usually plant grains and clover.

I'm not a farmer but I do know that a farmer doesn't want crap in his rows. Heck he doesn't even want leaves on his cotton at harvest, thus the use of defoliant.

If it was my cotton id say have at it. Your crops might get 6inches tall by the time he harvests the cotton. Couldnt hurt him.

Exactly my point. Just getting opinions from everyone. I don’t see how it can do anything negative to the crop/farmer and it helps me out.

Could be correct but be sure to discuss it with the farmer before you do anything in his crops. That's his livelihood.

One thing to consider is that you're planting a co er crop that be will have to deal with next spring.....That may or may not be an issue to him. Let's just say he shows up to a big heavy stand of mature cereal rye the next spring....Be may love it or hate it depending on his mentality toward planting methods. That being said....if you do plant it I'd wait until dry October

How would a defoliant "not" kill everything?

I’ve read more than one person say that they plant like this and the defoliant makes it brown but first good rain it comes back

Your idea will work lots of farmers have planes plant cover crops like this every year. Just discuss with the farmer first to make sure he is ok with it.

Certain defoliants can harm fall seeded grains. Mainly ginstar that has diuron in it.
