Grows only in a wet area on the edge of a hay field/pasture. Very thick and will choke down a bush hog unless you go slow. No visible flower so I assume it's a grass. Gets about 2' tall. It's about a foot tall in the pics. It will stay submerged every Spring for a couple months and seems to stop growing but goes back to growing when the standing water dries.

It's not bahia grass. Could be buffalo grass.

Looks like reed canary grass. I have it in a couple of spots. It will head out in the mid summer and look like fescue.

I'll try and get a better picture or two to show size. Also, it burns (when dry after poisoning with gly or bush hogging) slow and hot, with a black smoke like it is full of oil.

That is a very fitting name if that's what it is but can't find much on a google search. Does it have another common name?

No that’s entirely colloquial...

I can't remember ever seeing a seed head BUT that may be because I never cared to pay much attention as it only affected a small wet area and was never a problem. Also, we mow it down once or twice a year and maybe it doesn't have a chance to seed.

It's been there my entire life and I just now got curious about it. Funny how life works.
