We are tired of feeding hogs. We fenced in feeders on our property ( both gravity and spreaders) and it has worked well. However, it gets pricey to put 6-8 16 ft hog panels around each feeder. The panels are 4 gauge galvanized and typically run $23-$25 per panel. We just got a lease for another 800 acres near Oak Hill. We put feeders out and based on the pictures fencing is going to be required. Anyone use something else that may be more economical and still effective ?

have you looked at cutting the panel in 1/2. only a 2 ft fence? Seems like it would keep out the hogs from just walking up to the feeder. not sure if they would hop over that or not., as i have not tried it

Actually we have - it keeps some of the hogs out but not the big ones.

gotcha, those are the only thing i could think of, as the other wire rolls would be too thin and flexible for it.

Back when I was in college, I raised hogs to cover expenses. I raised thousands of hogs over the years and used "hog wire" to keep them in the lots. Small squares of wire at the bottom and the squares of wire get larger at the top. I don't know the official name of this wire, but used with cedar posts, you can keep anything in or out. Just go to your local Co-Op and ask for a roll of Hogwire. They should be able to fix you right up.

Hope this helps,
B

I forgot to add, I never had trouble with hogs rooting under the fencing. I never used rings in their noses either. This might be a problem in the wild. Just have to try and see how it works.

If you’re already putting panels together to keep hogs put, why don't you start trapping them and removing? The only thing you need is a gate.

It's too hard to get away and shoot the damn things once we've got'em. Live in Pcola and hunt near Oak Hill. Did large C-traps last summer on one of the properties with fairly good success. Just too hard to get all the sounders

Just wait til you are there to drop the gate.

Buy cow panels instead, cut in half lengthwise, and add one strand of barbwire to the top.

Winner winner chicken dinner

Take it from someone who has beaten their head over managing hogs for over 20 years. Matt has the correct answer to your question. No matter what your response is or what rationale for not doing so is.

Wish it was hunting season.....year round

Build a large C-trap and feed them with it wired open. When you go up for a few days, set it. You could even set a cheap Micro-link cell cam on it if you have cell sevice.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...
