I was hoping to not plant this summer and the whole Covid19 mess probably will be the final nail in the coffin. I want to put more of our limited resources into the fall planting. Has anyone else considered skipping this summer for any number of reasons?

I’m not planting summer food. It’s all total failure on my place due to density. I’m letting my reseeding crimson dry down. Then bush hog it late June. Work on some weed control for the months of July and August and plant my fall food on time. Wather permitting in early fall

I may plant since I’m getting $3400 from the feds and wife and I are still both working. But I’m waiting till May just in case things change.

You never do anyway. Plus that deer herd would eat those tiny plots in bout 1/2 a day.

Just curious what type of weed control do you do and what are you spraying with? I have a lot of volunteer ryegrass in several of my fields but I hit them with glyphoaste aboout 2 weeks ago hoping that might help. Unsure if it will or if I just wasted some time and chemical.

Im not technically planting anything but I dont look at what I'm doing as "doing nothing".....My silviculture teacher used to say that doing nothing is still doing something and that's sorts the way I look at my summer plots....I've got mine about where I want it now in that it's growing a pretty diverse mix of natural plant species. The last time I did a count I found over 25 different ones. I would still like to get more of a legume component mixed in. Right now my fields do everything I need for them to do without having to "plant". They provide browse/forage for the deer and improve my soil. Just my opinion but I think about 90% of summer plots that folks plant are just wasted time and money...That's not saying all of them are but most. They don't really accomplish anything other than giving the hunter that little happy feeling as he watches it being eaten to the ground......and that's all good if it gives you enjoyment to just get out and work the land, etc.....Many folks lose perspective though on what's actually being effected by their plantings. A lot are probably doing more harm to soil health than anything else

I’m just gonna let this all go to seed. Biomass organic matter and seed for fall. I’m 6’2” and clover is hitting me belt high.

We haven’t in several years. I’m gonna plant some screening this year with Egyptian Wheat. Will probably put some beans in our to big plots simply because I will be out there.

Oats and crimson clover? That would make some jam up hay, a lot of it!

I planted about 4acres of icpeas monday, they were sprouting yesterday. If it works out right, im gona throw and mow the same 4acres in oats when the peas play out.

Dang 257, what rate did you plant that crimson at? We have a bunch of it looking great too that we are just gonna let it grow, but not as thick as that. Also, not that familiar with triticale, but why is it not starting to get a seed head on it yet? At what point after the crimson seeds out will you mow it or spray it?

10# crimson per acre. We were in a big drought. Planted late October. It’ll be heading out this next week.

If I had that much open feild, Soybeans and
Morre soybeans.. I've seen the big buck pictures
You have when.you post them 257. They are some impressive deer
My Aunt owned
320 acres in Atauga County. There was around 200 acres.
Of open feild on it. The whole 200 acres of open feilds was usually
Plantedi in soybeans. We killed some really good deer off
It When she passed away it got split up in
The family and was put up for sale. Now the new
Owners fenced it in, It's called White City Whitetails.

I’m gonna plant some sorghum as soon as the soil temp gets up a little more for deer and turkey to use this fall. The guy who farms my place planted dry land corn this year so I figure either he makes a crop and there’s plenty on the ground after harvesting or it’ll be a bunch of nubbins that I can leave standing. We clear cut 260 acres year before last, sprayed burned and replanted last year. If the deer can’t find summer food out there then piss on ‘em.
