6.8 has been more emphatic on deer and hogs than the Grendel, for me. That’s probably more anecdotal to the bullets/velocities I’ve used in the 6.8 vs what I tried in the 6.5. I just feel that inside 100 it was noticeable. I may bump to 300 HAMR and try it. 223 and the right bullets works for the right shots, as does the Grendel....it’s the after the first shot mayhem that causes problems for some stuff. It’s needing a quick follow up that causes problems with the big kickers. If shooting multiples day/night isn’t your niche, most anything will work from a stand to take a single, stationary hog.....but I’m not claiming any major expertise, either....few get to shoot 500/yr like Bill Wilson, or thousands like Jaeger.

I just replaced my 7.62x39s that were purpose built to hunt deer and hogs with grendels. More than double the range, much better terminal performance due to high sectional density bullets with almost no recoil.

Terminal performance is FAR more about a bullet design, than a headstamp.....if you’re only shooting factory, the 6.5 loads I’ve used weren’t nearly as emphatic at usual hunting ranges, as the factory 6.8 loads. That could be changing, but stuff inside 200 always died faster for the same placement, with 6.8, or even 223 sometimes.

Try sst. They are explosive. I use more robust bullets because I want as much penetration as I can get. Not much difference between 6.8 spc and 6.5 grendel inside 200 yards ballistically or terminally. The difference comes beyond that, 6.8 runs out of steam at 200ish and the 6.5 is just getting started. I used 6.8 spc for a while when they first came out but switched up to 7.62x39 once the ar world figured out how to make one run. Now it's grendel until something better comes along.

Actually, it WAS the bullets available (SST was one of them) and performance UNDER 200 (90% of AR hunting use for me) vs sometimes past 200, which led me to dump the Grendel FOR a 6.8, years back. I do load, but don’t intend to load for ARs for hunting. There may be better stuff now, but until Nosler screwed up the SSA 110 AB, and Fed screwed up the XM68, those two were far better hunting rounds than anything I found over the counter in a 6.5....which was either too explosive, or didn’t expand well at the velocities of a Grendel, especially in smaller deer and hogs. Waiting for shots past 200 might have worked to make the SST useful, but from 0-200 was where the need was. I still may jump to the HAMR, but everything most tout in a Grendel is not as helpful for how/what I hunt with an AR, and having enough emphasis in the act. Just my druthers. The 6.5 creedmoor does some impressive things with some of its bullet/velocity combos. Just never saw that from a Grendel, but maybe I gave up too soon..

Do like my son, get a 458 SOCOM and nothing in the continental U.S. will stand up to it.

We use 6.5 Grendels. We shoot Wolf FMJ that has been pretty cheap til the current panic and now it is hard to find. But it's an inexpensive round for those of us that go through a 1,000 rounds a summer or more.

Sure, my 308 has better knock down but it's way more expensive when someone empties the clip and hits nothing! smile

My grendel is a sweet tool, amo selection is sparse but Im sold. Ive killed deer hogs and yotes with it.
Check out the 300 Hamar, 30 cal but shoots flatter than a 30/30. all you need is the barrel and mag uses same bolt and everything else as the ar 15.
Def my next build.
