Recoil ever felt? The adc 45/70 Derringer handgunwise A 5 lb .338 rifle and a h&r topper with a 2.75 slug. I've shot .577&.470's .465 c&h .350 Rigby and 9.3x72 all were a shove compared to that light .338. My notes tell of a .338 KT that weighed 10.5 lb that wasn't bad.
Only hits count.

4.8 pound yildiz single shot 12-gauge with 2.75 inch one-ounce slug at 1650 fps. no recoil pad. bruise under my right cheek. bruise on my right shoulder. not bad at all with a gel pad and reduced recoil hornady slugs at 1350. danged accurate, too, out to 40 yards. NEF single shot 10-gauge NWTF 3.5-inch - butt stock full of bird shot, and gun weight at maybe 10 pounds. cheek slap was profound, and unavoidable, no matter the grip on forend. i patterned it for a friend many years ago. mama. last but not least, the worst cheek bone punch of 'em all: early marlin 1895 with curved butt plate in .45-70. mama mia. SO light in front of the receiver, even full of rounds in the mag. CARAMBA . i chalk all of these up to stock design more than anything else ...

A 454 Casull in a Bond Derringer. I ended up getting surgery in the web of my hand to fix the damage. I was taped up, didn’t break any bones. A fella from Bond broke his wrist, shot it straight up.

An 870 supermag with 3.5" turkey loads. I have a 3" 870 that I love and a 3.5" SBE2 that I have no problem with, but something about that 3.5" 870 that kills me. The way the stock fits me, it hits me square on the cheek bone.

I’ve never shot anything bigger than a 300 mag, and that didn’t really bother me.
What hurt me was a Remington 7400 30-06 with no recoil pad. I tried sighting it in for a boy and he brought me 2 boxes of 180gr shells. I’ll never own or shoot a 30-06 or a rem auto rifle bc of it.

Once I pulled both triggers at the same time on a side by side 12 gage loaded with 3" 00. Once. Done that about 18 years ago & my shoulder hasn't been the same since 😲

I've shot a lot of different calls over my yrs from 22lr to 50 mg and 10ga.
I would have to go with a light weight 375 H&H Mag or my 10ga with 3 1/2" heavy loads. Did have a 7mm RUM that I hated to sight in but wasn't to bad for a big guy like me.

X2 on the Mossberg 835. It was my first turkey gun I got for myself . Almost 20 years later I still remember that first 3 1/2 inch turkey load . X3 I figured after shooting one 3.5" if a 3" couldn't kill it I don't need to be hunting it.

Been there, went through a box before I realized that my bro in laws scope base had a stripped screw and was moving after every shot. No recoil pad sucks. Also any 3/3.5" turkey load without a turkey in your sights can be brutal. I quit sighting them in. It's cheaper on my wallet and shoulder to just get close enough to not matter

I have a lightweight 375H&H that kicks nowhere near as bad as that damn 835 3 1/2 did.

Nothing I have ever shot comes close to a 12 gauge 3 1/2 inch magnum turkey load out of a Mossberg 835 or Remington 870. Helped a friend sight in a Ruger Model 1 in 375 H&H mag one time. Most powerful rifle cartridge that I have ever fired. It was nothing compared to those 3 1/2 inch turkey loads.

Crazy as it sounds, the worse felt recoil for me was from a slim and trim Spanish built 16ga side x side, had a straight English stock with a curved metal buttplate. Beautifully engraved little gun. A buddy handed it to me and said to give it a try. On the "Pull!" and a jerk of the trigger I was sure I had fractured my right cheek bone, eye socket and my collar bone. Left a bruise on my face and shoulder, that thing was unreal for a little shotgun. A close second in the shotgun world would be a 3.5 inch 870 with turkey loads......did that once.......and I will stick with my semi-autos and 3 inch shells thankyouverymuch! Rifle wise, I have fired 458 Weatherby Mag, 416 Rigby, and 458 Lott. None of those were that bad but then again all were pretty heave rigs and the recoil was just a firm shove. Handguns.......454 Casull is the biggest I have touched off, and again it wasn't all that bad. Cranked off a few rounds out of a buddy's old Ruger in 45 Long Colt once, using his hunting loads......those would thump ya.

I have a FIE 12 gauge O/U I rigged many years ago for a Turkey gun , it's a light gun and has no recoil pad . Mr. Turkey hooked me up with some 3" TSS , big blue , Mother of all Turkey loads. Good lawd, that thing will hurt you , think I shook some fillings loose !

My grandads old single shot with no rubber for recoil pad. I grabbed that gun one day and a box of #8s and went to shoot some doves. My shoulder was almost pulp by the time I got close to limiting out. I wasn't as smart as you guys to stop after the first shot, I kept shooting, because doves kept falling. I haven't shot that gun since. Ok, so it isn't some heavy 3 1/2 turkey loads, or a double pull on buckshot, nor a 454 casull, I had enough just with a box of those 8s. There was something about the way that gun fit my shoulder I guess.

If I remember I saw a chart several years ago about PSI of felt recoil over all of the different calibers and gauges.. I don't remember much if anything was higher than a 3.5" 12 gauge. That's probably Chuck Hawk's table and you're correct. Around 72lbs of felt recoil. Compare that to a 300 Win Mag at about 27 lbs and it puts it in perspective.

A 3.5 Turkey Load from a 12 gauge is pretty much the pinnacle of felt recoil.
Yet everyone appears to have no problem shooting it at a 20lb or less Turkey.
Meanwhile on ALDeer - anything more powerful than a .243 shot at a deer... well, you will die. Just don't even try it.

Old Ithaca 10 ga. Automatic with triple 000 buckshot, had about a 30 inch barrel . It packed a real good thump.

Moss 835 with red federal 3.5 turkey load. Nothing comes close. Shot it one time and never pulled the trigger on it again. Let a friend borrow it, one shot and he was done with it. Let another friend shoot it , he cussed me bad. Sold it , guy shot it and asked if I wanted to buy it back. It’s like a 1/4 stick of dynamite going off on your shoulder

Handgun: S&W .500 is a damn handful Shotgun: Mossberg 835 with 3.5" shells Rifle: (I've shot some painful ones over the years. There are three that stand out though.) Kimber Montana in .325 WSM T/C Pro-Hunter 45-70 loaded up to near .458 Win Mag velocity .378 WBY Mag in a lightened Mark 5 Weatherby Rifle. Some pros say that the .378 is the worst felt recoil in shoulder fired weapons. I tend to agree......

I still say my yildiz youth model 20 ga with TSS kicks worse than my 835 with 3.5". doesn't matter at a turkey, you never feel it. But shooting paper it will rattle your teeth
