I’ve owned and trained many labs over the last 25 years and have had two gems. My daughter had to have a Golden retriever for Christmas and I’ve been working with her since she got her. She’s very smart and got all the basic commands down pretty easy. Swimming is another story she loves the water but is the most awkward swimmer I’ve ever seen. Most pups labs are that way but this Golden can’t seem to figure out to get her back end up and almost swims vertical with a lot of splashing and not real effective. I figure she’ll figure it out but after a month I m beginning to wonder. Thoughts?

Based on her being a Christmas pup, I presume she's 4-5 months old. She's still a pup. In the next few months she will look like a 12 year old who's 6'2" and weighs 110lbs. Give her time, she will figure it out.

I figure she will. I’m just use to the labs backend coming up after a couple of swims as pups.

Seen the same issue with several labs. They are either so excited to get in the water that they are putting in a lot of vertical effort but swimming very slowly. My other theory is they are holding the head up trying to see what they are chasing. Most dogs level out and swim well once they have the bumper or retrieving object in their mouth. Lots of swimming and every one worked out fine. Seems to be mostly a young dog issue.

Our golden just turned 3. What an awesome dog. He swims great. He can track a deer like nobody’s business too. I did have a Weimaraner that had the swimming problem when he first started. He figured it out.

Don't blame me for your bad decision-

She’s swimming like a champ now. Heck of a lot more laid back than a lab pup

That's awesome! Right there with you because after seeing others with lab puppies that are wired 24/7...Same with ours...we took him to the lake with another golden who loved the water, and he relishes every opportunity to jump in! Fiance was taking the pool topper off and before they could stop him, Monroe launched in there and started swimming all around lol

About to start training him with a shock collar because it seems he has selective hearing at times with the "Come" command lol

Man this little girl has stole my heart. My 8 year old lab has broken several of her bad habits like going near road or chasing chickens. I’m sitting in the recliner now drinking coffee with a 50 lb Golden curled up in my lap.😬

Best thing we got for ours was one of them electric fences that you don’t even have to dig the line...aft he got zapped a couple times, now as soon as he hears the beeps he will stop on a dime and won’t cross! Got the shock collar now to get him out of the habit of playing keep away when trying to get him to come...Dont even have to shock because it has a beep setting and he will come at the beep lol

😂

My golden figured out how to beat the electric fence. She would get as low to the ground as she could and run as fast as possible across the line. After that it was hopeless. She has been the best dog I have ever owned though. Not hunted at all for anything but awesome family pet
