I have my very first gun that I haven't shot in years. really old 16ga. I'd like to let my boy shoot it this season. Can I shoot heavy shot? Is there much of a supply of shells for a 16 and where.

If youre talking old as in pre war I wouldn't shoot anything but low brass loads if the gun is in good condition
If its 50's and above and in good condition then by all means shoot what you want in it

When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself

This is a good source for light load shells for old shotguns. I buy 28s from them often.

They are temporarily closed now due to the pandemic.

What's the info on the gun? 16ga field loads are readily available at reasonable prices. Some duck and pheasant loads are out there too. No turkey loads out there from what I can find. I started reloading 16ga, but soon learned it's just as cheap to buy cases of dove loads.

Have you tried Wally World? They have some 12 and 20, I don't own a 16, so I wasn't looking for those. If an academy is still open, they may have some. I think you will be fine shooting high brass #4, 5, 6's out of it. I would not shoot the new Hevi shot, bismuth, etc. from it. You don't have to have those fancy loads, just get some of the aforementioned loads and have confidence knowing those loads have killed turkeys for years and years before this new stuff came out.

It’s a .16 side by side Lefever. It’s prewar I’m pretty sure. I’ve shot boxes and boxes of low brass #6 as a kid. Shot some #4 turkey if I remember right. Just haven’t shopped shells for it in 20 years.

I'd have a gunsmith check it out before I put any ammunition through it. Really old 16ga's could be 2 1/2's or 2 9/16's. I think by the 1930's the 2 3/4 was standard. I'd make sure it was ok before I put modern ammo through it. If it is an obsolete chamber, the aforementioned RST has ammo for it.

Edit: The website dog's and doubles has a contact about old Lefever's. Says to email Gregg@dogsanddoubles.com and maybe he can tell you more about your gun.

Cool, thanks! I looked up the info years ago but now forgot. It's pretty old for sure. i did find some 2 3/4 #4 in Walmarks.

Browning and Remington made #6s. Apex sells tss shells but I’m not sure they would be safe in it. I won’t shoot them in a savage 311 16ga because I’m afraid they would damage the barrel

"very old 16ga." HOW old?!?! Need a LOT more info! IF it is a VERY old 16 ga, could be short chamber 2 9/16"! I have one - Win Mdl 12 16 ga. Have to reload or shoot RST 2 1/2" shells. Can be same if it is a very old Browning A5 or Double gun with the old short chamber. And/or IF it is a Damascus bbl! (and prob wouldn't shoot one of those!)

Regardless, if it is very old, but still sound enough to shoot, I would still recommend light load 2 1/2" RSTs. If, on the other hand, you consider 1950s old, and it is, say, a Winchester or Stevens or Ithaca, then std 16s should be ok. Walmart has (had?) those.
