I did not get to hunt much this year due to back to back crud episodes but one morning during the first week of January I was sitting on one of my food plots hoping to see the old buck that I have been after for years. I did not see him but had a great show with multiple bucks chasing does all morning. Well, this past Sunday I pulled camera cards and discovered that old buck was feeding in a narrow strip with clover in it about 100 yards away from that plot at the same time I was sitting there. He was there for quite a while. That evening I sat the same stand and a 10 pt that I have been wanting to get a look at on the hoof but had no daytime pics of was on the next plot over from me. I would not have shot him as he is a 4 year old but find it ironic how they can be so close and you never know it. Here are a couple of pics of the old buck and one of the 10 pt. The last pic is a few surprise visitors that took up residence around a feeder for a few days.

I have high hopes for that 10...if he makes it. He is not as heavy as that pic makes him look. They all look bigger from that angle anyway. I posted pics of him in this forum about the time he shed his velvet. This pic is the first daylight pic of him during hunting season. No pics at all of him since then but he is very reclusive. I will pull the cards in a month or so and see who made it. I let two exceptional 3 year old 8 pts go this year and both of them were still alive as of last weekend.

Do all the deer in your area smile for the camera?

He looks happy in a Gomer Pyle sorta way.

There was 6 of them. They emptied out a 300 lb protein feeder and then upended it. They mowed down 2 plots of forage oats and turnips and a big strip of clover. I should go visit the neighbor and tell him how I want my beef loins cut and packaged when he slaughters one.

We hunt with cattle on the same property. We built fencing for winter and summer pastures. Try our best to keep cattle away from the hunting ground during season. But despite best efforts they often find a way to get out and access those luscious green fields. Just a natural part of hunting on, or near, a farm.

I know, I was just kidding. It does not bother me at all. I like this property BECAUSE it has farms around it.

Some years ago I had access to a big cow pasture next to a swamp. We planted an acre food plot and drive fence posts around it and strung bob wire. I was amazed that cows would get on their knees to get their heads under the wire. i had a new pickup and had to start parking and walking across it due to them wanting to lean on or scratch on it.

Oltimer, I am taking heat from everybody for letting bucks go. I don't need any more piling on!

That's why you get cell cams so you can walk over and shoot said buck when he shows up somewhere you are not.

I've got a question about those cell cams. Do they text you every time they take a picture?
I've thought about getting one or two, but I dang sure don't want another 200 text messages every day and night.
