I’ve only ever done day trip hikes, but I’m all about some canoe camping.

Who else does it? What’s some good spots to hit? I’ve done a bunch of in and outs on backwaters, but I’d like to do some down river float trips.

buddy of mine did like a week-long trip several years ago on the Mississippi. If I recall, he went with Quapaw Canoe Company, but I don't remember where they put in/took out. Canoe'd during the day and camped at night on various islands

I’ve watched some videos and talked to some ppl who did the Mississippi. I can tell you that ain’t for me! A man will get dead out there if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing.

True......as I look back, I think he went with Big Muddy Adventures out of St Louis. I imagine those guys are about as experienced as any. Definitely gotta take into account river conditions at the time though.

Quit trespassing on my hunting places......

A little joke. I don't get worked up over it, but there really isn't much public land for camping south of STL other than some of the newer Big muddy nwr and some state conservation areas and 1 state park. Used to be hardly any back in the 80's.

I've met some interesting folks over the years kayaking down the river (one guy from the st. Lawrence river and one from the Yellowstone). Most just ask about places to get supplies or a good spot to make camp.

Cool trip. I've never done it but i've spent a ton of time fishing out of Jon boats on it and camping from boats.

I wondered if they get permission from landowners to camp overnight on the bank or if they just do it without asking. Gotta think, with it being a business, they have specific places where they have permission.

I've always thought a weekend canoe/camping trip down the cahaba from Helena to West Blocton would be fun. There is enough miles of river there to take 2 days. Most if not all would run through the WMA however I don't think you can legally camp on the WMA outside of designated areas, that would be on drawback.

I have done a 7 day trip in the Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. We have also done a couple of overnight trips on the Elk River in TN but we had landowners permission for camping.

well, Missouri law was iffy about this until a few years ago. Used to be thought was ok up to the normal high water mark..(it never really was). But most land owners are pretty nice so it never was tested or people just moved on. A few years ago on the meramec river a guy shot somebody on the bank claiming it was his...courts said it was (but that ruling was also vague).

The way agents have told me is. Yeah, camp anywhere on the bank or get access of a right a.way (bridge). But if a land owner gives you trouble then just move on. I've camped on a lot of private ground (gravel bars) my whole life and only had one bad encounter. Most will simply be nice and ask you if you're having good luck or a nice trip.

I always let guys camp on our places and usually offered any food or drinks we had. People that canoe overnight are usually very respectable individuals. Sometimes the solo guys are a.little different, but respectable

Anybody put in the hooch below West point dam and take it to Columbus? I've been wanting to do that pretty bad. From Southwest of Atlanta to West point the river isn't pretty and has a lot of suspended sediment (and other things).

I haven't done much in Alabama except for 2 nights in the Mobile Tennesaw delta. Horrible trip because of weather and multiple scouts on the trip got a stomach bug. Otherwise it was a really good trip.

Buffalo River in Arkansas is a great trip for overnight canoe camping. I've done several trips in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s, none lately though.
Tons of Scout troops do this trip from multiple sections of the River.

I'd highly recommend it.

Have done several on the Elk River and dozens in the backwaters on the Tenn River and Cotaco Creek. Flint River too. And on Town Creek and Short Creek. Lots of great areas close by.

I have been wanting do the delta since I lived in Mobile back in 2003-2005. My issue is that I would want to do winter and winter the water is up a lot. So, I know your trip wasn't good, but any recommendations? I have to say I have a little worry about Gators. None of snakes, but I've dealt with rattlesnaks and cottonmouths growing up along the Mississippi, but Gators....not so much.

I-65 to the causeway???

I'd be in a freaking hammock high off the ground if I HAD to do it.
I've seen enough of the Delta that I do not want to spend the night there.
I've slept in the Deserts of NM, Sawtooth in Idaho and the Kilibucks in Alaska
But that Delta aint no place to be sleeping.

I’d be in a hammock regardless. That’s the only way to camp. The ground is for snakes and worms.

If you want solitude, black water, limestone bluffs and sandbars, the Suwanee River is a great trip. There is an outfitter at Live Oak Florida who will run shuttle for you. I used to park at their place and get them to take me up to Fargo Georgia to put in. Depending on current and your paddling prowess, it takes five or six days to get back to the take-out where your vehicle is parked.
http://shop.suwanneeoutpost.com/

If the Suwanee is too high or low for good camping and paddling, they have alternate trips on other nearby rivers. Spring is a good time to go--less heat and bugs. I had some very good times there.

Looks like good times. I really, really want to go to Mammoth Cave Park and do the river there. They have caves that open up into the river and sand bars to camp on.

Choctawhatchee is a good trip. You can put in up at Dale county and go to the bay. I've done a lot of it 30 miles at a time.
