There are 12 weekends of gun season. There are SOA hunts scheduled for 5 of those weekends....weekend hunts only.

So, what's happening on the properties while there are no SOA hunts scheduled?

Is no one hunting the property? Is it used for state fat cats to hunt during "down" times? Does anyone know, or curious?

I have a friend that owns property across the road from the hit and miss at Portland landing. He said he hears plenty of gunshots when there are no scheduled hunts.

Bull... they are hunted by the “adults being mentored program”. When we were at uchee, the local game warden came and hunted an unhunted section one day. I’m sure they are doing it other days as well.

Yeah right.

The SOA areas are being hunted other than during the special hunts?

I thought that was one purpose of these smaller tracts that cannot receive much pressure: give the animals a chance to "rest" and thus create more special opportunities and quality experiences for those drawn for the hunts.

Idk about the game wardens but I know the guys running at least Portland and Fred T were adamant that they had to be drawn...think they can shoot hogs and predators though.

Yeah I know they have a couple of those "adult mentoring hunts" lol Wonder if I can sign up for one next year...maybe get em to take me on an "adult mentored turkey hunt" and just act stupid like the guy in the Ringer movie lol

Under Charles Kelly and then Corky Pugh, biologists were not permitted to hunt the WMA they managed, that rule has since been relaxed. As for SOA , if they did , they would be required to go by the established rules ,which would require being drawn for a hunt. Shooting hogs, taking mentored hunters, pre scouting for mentored hunters would be considered job related, managing the property.

Well if they aren't being hunted during that time it is a waste of the resource with very few hunters taking advantage of it. If they are being hunted, I would like to know who is in there and why.

I think it's SOA hunts on those weekends and mentored hunts the other weekends. I have no first hand knowledge of this. I'm only going on what I heard from the biologist/manager? at Portland last turkey season. I was under the impression that the place had not been hunted since the last SOA turkey weekend. But during casual conversation, the guy said something to the effect of "The guys that were here last weekend worked a bird on such and such road. The shooter could not get in position to kill him." Left me wondering too...

I'm assuming it was a mentored hunt?

Heck, if that's the case, that ain't much different than other private lands that get hunted every weekend just not so much during the week.

All I know is that I am grateful the the opportunity I had to hunt the place even if I swung and missed on a bird. At least I was in the game.
