I was reading online and it said it was legal to use gillnets in Alabama that were under 300 feet. I was wondering if I could put one in a lake or small river that was only about 10-20 feet long. I was also wondering how you set them up.

I don't think they are legal in freshwater any more.

I checked Outdoor Alabama and it says that they are legal if they are under 300 feet and you have a license to use them.

Just curious, why are you wanting to use a gillnet? I've never actually heard of anyone wanting to do that before. I'd be surprised if it's legal in freshwater.

This says it is legal for freshwater
You will have to copy and paste it

Going off of memory here....but I think it's can't be bigger than 25'×3' and has to be tied off with a cotton connection line.

Well it says they will approve where you can use it after you buy a commercial fishing license. So you will get you answer when you get your license.

@JBL I live next to a relatively small river and we have a bad carp problem where I fish, I was trying to reduce the amount that are down there.

gill nets of certain sizes are legal in AL freshwater. For non-game fish only. With a Commercial fishing license. LOTS of rules and regs for use.

Mesh size of nets is also a part of the equation.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Last I heard they were legal. I was talking with a local guide a couple years ago and he said he got a gun pulled in him because he was getting a crankbait loose from the gill net. Said the guy told him he wasnt gonna replace another one.

They are legal. A lot of commercial guys use them on the Tennessee River to catch trophy catfish to stock in pay lakes up North. I know a lot of people that are trying to get it passed to make it illegal. It's stripping our lakes and rivers of true trophy fish so people that don't know how to fish can pay someone and catch them in a pond. Not to mention the mess of getting tangled in them while fishing.

We used to do it at the island when i was a teenager and it was fun ( alot of work though) but never a dull moment lol. I can remember like it was yesterday the time we had a big azz shark roll over (actually happened a few times but that one was a monster) the net at the very end in chest deep water 😯🤣🤣
