What does it indicate exactly? Peak rut? Post rut? Just getting started?

Hormones and rubbing trees , bout like taking roids and going to the gym for a human. Indicates he's rubbing a lot letting other bucks know he's boss and gonna whip them and take the chicks.

It indicates all of the above. It’s sinply a rush of hormones that are responsible for muscle growth and aggression.

The rush of growth to antlers in summer in cervids and hormones at peak rut is truly fascinating.

Antlers are bone. Deer, elk and moose literally shed and regrow grow bones in mere months. If medicine could harness that info it could be staggering.

I don't think I realized how much weight they put on during rut until this year. It's also the first year I've run cameras consistently.

I've got this one deer I was getting on camera back in September and October. Nice 7 point, not very tall, but well outside his ears and he had a little belly so I knew he was older. I hadn't seen him on camera until a couple nights ago and that sucker looks like he's fixing to pop. His neck is at least three times as big as it was back in October and looks like it's equal size with his body. You wouldn't know it was the same deer if it wasn't for the rack. Dramatic change to say the least

They loose weight during the rut. They are constantly moving looking for a hot doe.

Had a processor tell me the other day that he knows the "real rut in on" when the adrenaline present in a buck starts to deteriorate the fat in a buck ( I guess the "run down/ weight loss appearance"). Anyone else seen that in a deer they were skinning??

I've read that cancer researchers study antler development because is such a fast growing natural tissue.
