Due Jan 31st. The complainers on my Texas hunting and fishing forums talking how much they owe this week. I was once one of them. I could never figure out why if you owned a home mortgage free, you still had a tax liability of $400 - $1000 (or more) a month just to pay the Texas Wealth Tax. I got better use for my cash than to pay that much each month to the county. I still pay half my Mom's taxes which is $2500 (my other brother pays the other half). Once Mom passes my sister better figure out how she is going to pay them as she gets the house. A state income tax is much better as it goes up or down according to my income. And I get to decide if I want to eat steak or baloney at the grocery store to pay the sales tax. I know a lot of Texans are looking at moving out of Texas when they retire because of the property taxes. So far Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida are the top choices. My best friend and his wife are coming here this summer to look at the housing market in the Huntsville area. They plan to move here when they retire.

Moving your entire household/family to another state for a few thousand bucks a year makes zero sense to me.

Come to Mississippi where you get to pay high property tax (2-4X what Alabama’s is) and a 5% state income tax.

Your friends eyes will pop out of their head when they see the housing prices in Huntsville. I dont know why someone would want to move there just to retire. It's super congested and has a high cost of living. It's a great place to work, but dead last on my list of places to retire.

Texas pretty much sucks in every way that anyplace can possibly suck.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Not compared to home prices in the DFW area. a 400k home in the Dallas market barely gets you 2300 sq ft on a zero lot line. And let's not even compare traffic between the two. It's all a matter of prospective. They want to be close to a major hospital, and Huntsville has plenty of healthcare choices.

I can agree if comparing to Dallas.

I would imagine there are plenty of smaller towns in Texas that would be nice places to retire?

I worked in the Mason TX area back in the late 70s. That's TX Hill Country and I really liked it there. LOTS of deer. LOTS.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

yeah I wouldnt move to huntsville unless your looking to join the workforce. not to many houses available and what is, is overpriced. I would think more like ft payne, scottsboro, cullman, birmingham. I hope alabama never raises the property tax to be like these other states. its really a retirement killer

This made pretty much ZERO sense to me and I was just curious... so I looked up a couple things

The first was if you work you will pay 5% State Income Tax. How does that save you vs. $2k additional in property tax? And property taxes aren't low as dirt everywhere either. Swoop into Huntsville there in a big house and you'll pay. $3k+ in tax for a decent house in a decent neighborhood in Birmingham is an all day affair. And that's just about where it gets started in many areas.

What about the fact that Alabama is ranked 4th HIGHEST in the country for sales taxes. Your Milk and Eggs and Bread... yea... we gonna tax that. Eat Bologna then. Groceries in N Alabama are high as hail. I'll go shop down in South Alabama and most times I'm thinking "did you ring all this up right."

The same job will demand roughly 30% more in wages in the DFW area.

Come to Alabama. Get a crappy pay check and save $2k on your property taxes....

and lastly,

Come to one of the worst run and poorest States in the entire County and save money on your Property taxes!

here is my suggestion:

Lousiana and MS are the only States that have us beat.... if the Short Bus breaks down there on the way here be advised.... just pop a tent and stay if that's what you are looking for.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Ok, property taxes are high, but the income tax is reasonable. Doesn't matter, govt will get you somehow.

Maybe someday AL will tax govt retirements like most states. But then most states have a lottery too.

On the low end at $400.00 a month that’s $4,800.00 a year. On a thirty year mortgage that’s $144,000.00
Miss paying and the government will get the property that you never own plus what you already paid. I’d say that’s a big ole win win for the government. And it’s a bunchofbullshit to me.

No vacancy in N Bama, Mississippi sounds like a good place to settle down.

Texas is one of a handful of states that don’t have a state income tax. They all tout this as a good thing, but they all make it up somewhere else.

Not high, they are ag or wildlife exempt. A 640 acre ranch runs about $500 a year.
