Pretty much the only way I hunt. Gave up climbing, ladders and shooting houses years ago

I love slipping around. Seem to learn more when I do. When I do climb it's because I am pretty sure something is coming by. My hunting buddies give me a hard time because I rather stay on the ground. They say you don't ever see anything. Well what they don't know cant hurt them.

I clear a spot at the base of a tree and sit for most of my hunting these days. I have one particular place that usually gives me a decent buck by this method and I hold out till conditions are right for that spot. Other places I just gamble on it and enjoy being there amongst all the wildness.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I'm known to Elmer Fudd around if the lay of the lands allows it and I'm not constricted to just one little area,,,, sometimes I take a fold up chair with me when my foots get to hurting... rest a little and then back up and on the trail...

I don't hunt from climbing stands but will use a ladder occasionally
Most of my hunting involves scouting an area, finding a good spot, unfold my tripod chair and sit still
If I really like the area I've found I'll set up a ground blind and have all the luxuries I need to be comfortable

When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself
The older I get the better I used to be

I'll hunt from a shooting house or ladder stand regularly, but rarely ever use a climber anymore. A shooting house is the most boring place in the world to me...unless there is tons of wildlife movement. By far my favorite method is to stalk hunt with wind in my face or cheek and work my way slowly. Often I'll end up at a green field at prime time and may hop in a shooting house during last hour of the day. I grew up stalk hunting and it's my favorite way to hunt. It's amazing what you can see by taking 30 minutes to go a short distance. It engages the mind and senses and to me it becomes hunting rather than ambush shooting....which is very refreshing. Nothing wrong with a good ambush, but nothing compares to stalking.

Admittedly it's how I grew up hunting, but I'm not a fan today. All of my younger, formative years were walking around...we mostly hunted Nat'l Forest land, dad would park us somewhere and we'd make a big loop and meet up, eventually making it back to the truck hours later. It was always "Go down that holler right there, not too far down yonder it'll split (not too far apparently meant waaaay the heck down there), when it splits just go straight up the finger ridge in front of you and there'll be a road on top (which typically was half a mile on top, and just a roadbed so dim you'd pass it if you weren't paying attention), when you hit that road turn left and follow it out till it falls off on the creek, cross the creek and go up that other big pine ridge (by this time my 12 year old self was scared to death and thoroughly lost, the last thing I was doing was looking for deer), and if you walk that big pine ridge back out you're gonna hit this gravel road we came in on, then just meet me back at the truck. Got it?" And I'd shake my head yes, even though I knew better. But most of the time I made it, and once in a while I'd shoot a deer or turkey or both. This would've been the 80's...no cell phones, and we didn't have walkie talkies or nothing. But I am who I am today because of those days, man I'd actually love to go back....didn't know what great times you were having.

Nowadays I hunt exclusively from a climber, on private land or most often public. Someone walking around is a nuisance now, I'm not for it. And the honest truth is I see far more game from the tree than I ever did on foot. I didn't do it this year, but for many years I'll usually go up on the mountain (Talladega NF, Cheaha Mtn) on Thanksgiving morning and make a big walking loop just for sentimental reasons. It's nothing like it used to be, just run to death with dogs, hardly any game left up there it seems. Never see a thing.

Yep. A lot of mornings I’ll get out of my climber around 10:30 or 11:00 and take a walk for bout an hour. Sometimes just a long scenic route back to my wheeler. Never know what you’ll sneak up on.

I've walked up on far more deer than I've ever seen from a stand. I like to walk, find a good place, mid ridge and sit against a tree.

I have spent most afternoons sitting on a greenfield over the years, killed a couple of big deer doing that. Most all mornings I have spent slow slipping thru cover and have killed a couple three walls of big old bucks doing that. My favorite way to hunt, I sit very little, almost always on my feet. One step..look..one step...look...again and again.

My all time favorite is slow slipping added with some rattling every few hundred yards. I have rattled up several wall hangers while on the ground.

I rarely sit anywhere but in a lock on when bow hunting, prolly 90% of my bowhunting. I think I have killed exactly ONE good deer when on the ground with a bow.

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

You should never stop trying to educate yourself and one of the best places to learn new things is to read. People do not read much anymore. And even more rarely read old books. That's too bad. You can learn a lot from reading.

If you are interested in the art of Still-Hunting read the first probably 1/2 of this book. The remainder is a little long winded:

The Still-hunter by Theodore Strong Van Dyke. It is about $1.99 on Amazon. It is from the 1800's and pretty much tells you exactly what it takes to be an efficient and effective still hunter. This coming from a time where a hunter had no concept of a tree stand and had to get close enough for a shot with irons. Pretty valuable skill set. One that I would say I have met very few people in my life that I thought were particularly good at. Very few. I could count them on one hand.

Our modern version of still hunting is piddle around and maybe sit by a tree for a bit.. get up and piddle around some more. I do this myself and have been very successful on numerous occasions. I would give my success more credit to not riding a tree on an unproductive spot more than to my skills as a still hunter. Even if that spot was only deemed to be unproductive for a the day. Think 75 degree December morning. I have to hunt when I can go not when the weather is good. If all you have in your bag of tricks it to make like a Squirrel and hide in a tree that's ok but that's not for me. I don't have time to waste. I can go bird watch any Saturday when deer season is out.

I'll give you another:

Whitetail : Fundamentals and Fine Points for the Hunter
by George Mattis

Another pre-treestand piece of gold. That book is chock full of ideas and methods that have faded away years ago.. which might get you out of a tree and into some productive hunting. In particular when conditions are not "great."

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Can't climb anymore. I don't even climb tree ladders. I hunt greenfields from a shooting house, or a blind.
